MP3 Playing....WHY?

WPKenny (Competent) posted this on Friday, 9th March 2001, 10:21

Ok, forgive me for being really dim here but why the hell would someone want a player (DVD, CD or otherwise) that could play MP3`s that have been burned onto disc by a PC. Why the hell not just play them through the PC? There can`t be THAT many people out there who get all their mates to burn them MP3`s onto CD cos they don`t own a PC able to do this, surely? Why not just play the mp3`s directly from your PC? If you`re that much of a tech head to be farting about with burning CD`s and getting mp3`s and messing with DVD firmware, then surely wiring up your computer to your Hi-Fi isn`t a proplem at all?
I just don`t get it.....unless, like I mentioned, you get your MP3`s on CDs from your mates.

Hi,
Wiring up the pc to the hifi is no problem, but the PC is noisey compared to a dvd player, takes ages to power up, and as I dont have a TV card, it would use loads more room. Finally, the PC is is a different room to the Hi-fi so that it can bu used without interfering with the family watching TV (through the hi-fi of course).

Who says the art of conversation is dead!!!

Cheers
Steve

why would anybody listen to an mp3 through a hifi.

They sound like s*** - at best like compressed FM radio...

MP3 is not hifi and as a format sucks.

If you want decent music stick to cd or sacd through a decent cd player.

I`m not sure what sort of MP3`s you`ve been listening to but all the mp3`s I make from my own CD`s (for back-up purposes of course) sound perfect through my hifi. I encode mainly at 128kbps and every now and again at 192kbps. That`s using Audio Catalyst version 2. Perfect rips every time. I admit a certain amount of mp3`s gathered from the web are poor quality..but then..it`s free music isn`t it? I often burn MP3`s to audio CD`s to listen to on the train to work and they sound great.

I Disagree. It depends heavily on the encoding. Granted, it`s not as good as CD, but it`s not too far off.
Anyway, I only use it for background music and I get 8 - 12 hours worth of random tracks without touching the player (should I want it). If I`m in the mood for sitting down and listening to music properly, then I`ll use the original CD.

Reasons for Mp3 on my DVD player:

1. Computer not in Living Room

2. Computer speakers suck! ( compared to hi-fi)

3. Upto 200 tracks on 1 CD-R/RW!! (save money)

4. When only have a few tracks but don`t want to waste a CD-R. Put Mp3`s on a RW for now.

Lots of others but can`t think now!

I bought a DVD player mainly for the Mp3 playback!!

Napster / Audiogalaxy / Winmx...

Saves a hell of lot in storage space!

MP3 sounds great if you know what you`re doing. Try RADIUM Fraunhofer CODEC v1.283 (considered the best by many) or freebie BladeEnc.
I personally think BladeEnc slaughters the competition albeit it encodes some 10 times slower!

CDDA? Dont make me laugh!

Napster Rocks!!! (I will be sheading a tear tomorrow)
