r8sso (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 27th November 2003, 14:48

I wonder if anyone can offer any advice. Im looking to buy the in-laws a DVD player for Xmas, but obviously dont want to send a fortune on them...

I have noted the Amazon player for 30 quid, but am willing to pay a little extra. Any suggestings for about 50 notes???

Many Thanks.

[EDIT] - This was meant to be in the Hardware Forum! Doh!

Personally I cant complain about the Pacific 1002W I bought from Asda, now £42 (did have a 3yr warranty, not sure now). Plays everything you throw at it too. Multi-region too, hack available on these forums.

I`d recommend the Dabsvalue player selling on (yes, you guessed it), Dabs, for around £40. It`s a Ronin 315 and there are codes to make it multi-region in this site`s hacks section. I got one for my girlfriend last month. There is no scart lead included but the 3-phono plug lead supplied will get you started. It`s a cracking entry-level machine and plays back data discs with jpegs and mp3s. The volume control on the remote is also a nice touch.

Failing that, Sainsbury`s usually have one of the Mico players for under £50 and these have garnered much praise. I have one myself and I`d recommend it as an alternative to the Ronin machine.

If you can stretch to 60 notes, Richer Sounds have the excellent Toshiba SD220E Region 2 for sale. Smashes other Supermarket specials out of the ballpark!

Although it is an obsolete model (replaced by the £80 330E)

Anyone know what the two players Toys`R`us are doing (a Medion and a Daewoo) are like? Hacking, macro, mpg, general quality, etc? I`ve got a Pacific 1002w and it plays almost everything, but the NTSC/PAL conversion is a bit jerky.

The Richer Sounds machine is the SD230E, and according to another thread (looking for a DVD player around the £60 mark), the Pioneer DV360, also from Richer Sounds at £60, is a better machine.

Funnily enough, that`s what I`m buying for my in-laws...

I`ve got no problems with my Aiwa 370, I`ve got loads of R1 dvds and can honestly say I`ve never noticed one scene on any of them that appears jerky.

It wasn`t on my old Samsung 105 - now sold, unfortunately.

So; can anyone recommend a budget player that handles MP3s and MPGs, is multi-region hackable and isn`t jerky on NTSC playback? Preferably with no Macro too, although that`s not a priority.
