Bit of tight budget that, but you should be able to get following
Player - Toshiba 330 - around £90
Surround - Sony HTBE1 - I saw it advertised at £150 on the net 2 days ago.
Just do a search for either of above.

Gotta be seperates as you can chop and change as your mood (and budget) allows and as previously said there is just no contest in terms of quality. The downsides being that it takes more time and knowledge to get a good setup and once you start down the slippery slope then it begins to take over your life!

Trust me, you start to replace your kit from the bottom up and it just never ends!!!

Ok, you are really going to struggle with only £240. The HTBE option earlier is nice but isn`t seperates in the truest sense of the word. I`ve had a look around for bargains but come back to Richer Sounds every time. If you can stretch your budget to £350 then you could have this:

Toshiba SD330 (Multi-region) DVD Player: http://www.richersounds.com/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=301209

Pioneer VSXC100 Amp: http://www.richersounds.com/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=300401

Eltax Spectrum Speaker Package: http://www.richersounds.com/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=206914

The Eltax speakers even include an active sub!

All that comes to a shade under £320. Use the extra £30 to get a half decent Co-axial Digital cable to connect the DVD to the Amp and some cheapish speaker cable (NOT BELL WIRE THOUGH, as they generally sell in B&Q etc...get some Gale cable from Richer or something).

That system should satisfy you for the time being. In a year or two when you have a bit more cash, I would upgrade the Cable, followed by a better speaker package (not a sub and satelites like the Eltax, but proper Hi-Fi type speakers)...a year later, maybe the Amp, and then the DVD after about 4-5 years when DVD recorders are two a penny and can actually play back DVD`s well (unlike most of todays current models). As mentioned in a previous post, once you start you just can`t stop. However, I can`t help but have a smile on my face when I go round to my mates (they have Venturer and Sony all-in-ones) and watch a film on theirs and then I go home to listen to `true` home cinema on mine. Mine ain`t perfect (I`m considering changing ALL my speakers) but it`s a damn sight better than theirs! :D

Hope that helps ;)
