Amp or receiver, what is the difference ?.

Can anyone explain what I would go for if I want to upgrade to Dolby Digital sound ?. I currently have a Dolby Pro-logic TV, with a DVD player with a Bitstream/PCM digital Audio out socket on it. So what would I buy, an amp or receiver ?, From what I`ve read about them, they appear to be almost the same!??.

They are the same except the receiver has a built in radio tuner

Bitstream means you can connect digitally from your DVD player to your amp and get the Dolby Digital/DTS decoding done there.

PCM means Pulse Code Modulation : good old 2-channel stereo found on CDs, etc to thee and me.
