Philips player skips and freezes

jimmyjoe (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 25th May 2003, 11:30

Hi,

I`ve been hitting problems with my Philips LX7000 dvd/sound system. I got it about 7 months ago. Some discs skip/freeze in the second half of the movie. I orignally thought it was the discs at fault and went back to the store to get them replaced which did work in some cases. Now I see the problem more often. I brought the system back to the seller and asked them to play a disk that would freeze/skip in exactly the same places - this worked perfectly in their system. What seems to happen is that the DVD player is searching for the track on the disk but can`t find it - I had something like this before on a CD player - you could hear the laser moving back and forwards. The dvd plays fine on my Dad`s player as well.

Has anyone any idea what might be the problem here ? I`m thinking the laser might be out of alignment.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

I recently noticed that on the back of some DVD`s it actually points out that there can be some pausing in playback due to the dual layer (where applicable) nature of the disk in question. It sounds as if this is where the problem occurs, but if your machine does it a lot where others don`t then you surely have a case for refund/replacement. The very fact that the DVD played OK in their system and your dad`s tells you all you need to know.

I have a Philips 733 and this play fine with only the odd slight pause, usually once in a long movie, presumably at the point where it switches to the other layer in a dual layer disk.

It`s difficult being tough with unhelpful retailers but you have rights and should stick to your guns.

Good Luck!

Philips are renowned for this, you will probalbly find that it only happens on Dual Layer discs, if so, one of your lasers is either going or dirty, my bet is its dirty, so go buy yourself a DVD lens cleaner & Im 90% certain your problem will cease until you need to clean it again

My Philips player recently had the same fault, tried cleaning the lense, blew the dust out of it and it worked ok again for a few weeks then the fault returned but worse, seemed to play up more on cold days and in the morning. Tried cleaning the lense again and it would work for a few days then only for a few hours.

Took it to a friend in the know to look at he said the same, possible laser out of alignment, he also said they sometimes have a pre-heater on the lense to get rid of condensation which can go faulty, like the dew sensor in videos.

To cut a long story short, worked out how much it would cost to repair baring in mind there was no guarantee this would cure the fault and it worked out cheaper to buy a new player. Went for a Toshiba SD220.

Philips is sat on shelf gathering dust now, probably still works intermitently but no spare telly to connect it to, will just keep as a spare for when the Tosh decides to die.

Ger.

Hi Folks

thanks for the replies. I brought it back to the dealers, Richer Sounds, and they sent it off for repair. They couldn`t give me any detail on what was fixed other than "a module was replaced". The disk in question now plays without any problems so it`s happy days

Cheers,
jimmyjoe
