More Scan Woes?

daveo (Competent) posted this on Friday, 5th January 2001, 15:14

I wonder if in a few days, once all the `new` Scan SC2000 machines have been despatched, there will be another stream of complaints from disgruntled Scan customers?

Will we hear that Scan have still not ironed out the creases in their customer services system/DVD players/etc etc...?

Maybe I`ll be wrong, although I do look forwards to bear`s next installment of jokes - his two brain cells must be working over time!

Well, I for one am looking forward to my SC2000 turning up (awaiting despatch now according to parcel tracking).. I`ve seen a couple in action now, and apart from the £899 player in the local "I`ve more money than sense" a/v store, I haven`t seen a better player (I didn`t even dare look to see what the £899 player was, I might have been tempted).

Still, I bet there are plenty of SC2000 owners out there who wait with baited breath for new firmware releases (*ahem* MP3 long filenames *ahem*). Looking forward to a download/faq site on www.scan, Nelley .. Have you any problems with me bringing one up myself?

Let me know how you get on. Despite the adverse comments on this forum I would be prepared to give it a go for £175. It can`t have received so many good press reviews without some justification. I am assuming there must be more satisfied customers than disatisfied ones or they wouldn`t be selling "like hot cakes" still.

My friend, the only reason these players are selling like "hot cakes" is that the average DVD owner these days is completely gormless and wouldnt know his DTS output from his abdominal stoma.

Oh the good old days when the first generation machines were owned by the exclusive few....

So you didn`t have one then?

Yes, but presumably the press reviewers are a bit more enlightened and have actually used the machines. Or am I being totally naive?
Anyway can anyone tell me why, for instance the Pioneer 535 is better than the Scan machine. Hard facts please e.g. technical spec.

Read the lab tests in home cinema choice, (www.homecinemachoice.com).

Don`t worry if you`re too thick to know what they`re talking about, they`ve come up with a revolutionary system of using stars to give a rough indication of quality for all the rems out there.

I bought one of the October batch of Scans and was quite happy with it. I think its a much better machine than the Wharfedale and for £186 all in is great value for money. The MP3 facility is very good. Based on seeing my machine I now know 3 people who have bought Scans (all are happy) and one guy who is waiting for his to be despatched.

Unfortunately my machine died shortly before Christmas - to loss of power. I suspect that the internal fuse is blown, but obviously I don`t want to tamper with the machine. I`m waiting for a new "Jan 5th" player to arrive. I`m now more concerned about long-term reliability than picture and sound quality of the Scan (both of which I think are excellent). The Scan is a clone of the Manhattan reviewed on this site and that seems to come out OK.

Well, I took the plunge.
Ordere a Scan2000 on Thursday, paid £5 extra for at delivery, and it arrived at 9am Saturday.
So far so good - great pic/sound (Surround, not DTS).
region 9 (Multi) copes with Matrix R1, and Gladiator R2, no problems.

Looks OK, but I`ve put it in a cupboard with an All-in-one IR extender, so looks are not important !!

Cheers all for the help, I would have got the Aiwa, but for 1 SCART plug only, and none in the UK ANYWHERE !!!
