Wharfedale 750 - Does not recognise DVD - HELP !!!!

BennyBoy (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 8th October 2002, 00:42

I got a Wallace and Grommit R2 DVD with Wrong Trousers, A Great Day out etc. and tried playing it in my Wharfedale 750. It does nothing! Get the disc spinning symbol and nothing more.
Tried the same DVD on my PC and it worked. Tried OTHER DVDs in my collection R1, R2. They all work fine on the DVD player.

Has anyone come across this before? I think it`s a problem with the DVD itself, but would like to hear from other Wharfedale 750 users. Will it work on the 750S?

BB.

Mine`s about 3 to 4 years old now, and it never had a firmware upgrade (it`s from the 1st batch that Tesco sold) and I`ve got exactly the same problem, only with different discs (and plenty of them). It`s reached the point where I`m seriously thinking of chopping it for a new player.
My problem discs are...

Once Upon A Time In America R0
Blood Freak R1
Ghost Dog The way of the samurai R2
Jesus`s Son R2
The Name of the rose R0
The Cult video anthology R0
Final Fantasy disc 2 R2
Cannibal Apocalypse R1
Gangster No. 1 R2
1492 Conquest of Paradise R2
Tormented/Lady Frankenstein R0
Straw Dogs R0 (UK)

...and a whole bunch of other recently. It also doesn`t want to play vcds any more. They both just spin for ages so I need to power down to get the disc to eject, or it spins for a couple of times and then just stops without registering anything. This only seems to have started in the last 3 or 4 months, and the discs always play perfectly on other players.

I`m not sure what the problem is but I`m thinking that with the player being as old as it is it`ll probably be cheaper to get a new one than to get this one fixed. I don`t have a great deal of electronic know-how so I`m a bit hesitant to think about delving inside to see if it needs cleaning under the bonnet.

So you`re not alone, and I`d like to know what`s up too.

I rang Tesco`s helpline and they said it just needs an internal dusting. They won`t touch the 750`s now though, so it`s a case of getting a local repair man round to sort it out. Apparently.

Try a cleaner disc to see if that helps. If it doesn`t, take the lid off by undoing the 7 screws and then clean the laser at the back of the disc transport with a cotton bud. A little water should be enough to remove anything stubborn.

Took literally 5 minutes and worked a treat. Everything plays now that wouldn`t.
