How long can you leave your PC on for?....

skirpy (Elite) posted this on Friday, 31st May 2002, 22:18

Hello, i was just wondering about how long you can keep a PC on for without it burning out or anything.

I always switch mine off before i go to bed.

If there is no problem with it being on 24 hours, i would leave it on to do the long downloads it takes me to do with my 56k modem when i sleep.

Would it be safe to do this?

Cheers!

Should be no problem leaving your PC on 24/7. Some people argue that it this a good thing as booting up the PC from `No power` state daily uses up a huge amount of power and stran to the power supply and components.

My PC is in my bedroom and the dull humming of the fan will get to me after a while. If the PC was located elsewhere I probably would leave mine on all the time.

This would be good, i have started to make backup copys of my DVDs to S/VCD and it takes forever to do.

I always give my DVDs out to my workmates and some of them have been coming back a bit scratched.

It would be great just to go to bed and wake up with everything all done.

Cheers!

I never switch my pc off - no need to really. I goto bed so late, that I can just sleep through the noise of fans - even then it`s not that loud.

Blazingmonga, I`m not working for Microsoft or Bill Gates but I find Win XP very reliable. I used to use 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, ME and NT. I find that XP is far more stable than any of them (I know thats not saying much comparing it to the Win9x Operating Systems though!).

Since I installed XP I have had some programs crash but never a full system crash and I am yet to see a BSOD.
