Streaming question

Why is Sky Sports online, which I'm paying for, worse quality than the same channel on a stream.

I know that the software commercial streaming services use is designed to drop the quality of the stream as it detects your network connection not keeping up. This includes your wifi not working too well. They do this because they figure something is better than nothing.

Where as illegal streams are an all or nothing deal, if your network can't keep up the stream cuts out.

I have Virgin broadband 400mb and always had the same quality issue when using their player but if I switched to a 3rd party stream it was so much better.

Sorry but the network connection excuse wont work for them I'm on FTTP and the connection is solid and probably as fast as you'll get plus my PC is connected via ethernet not WiFi.
I get the same problem with the Beeb on football, little better than watching coloured blobs on a green screen sometimes.

Plus the stream is as reliable as most broadcasts. About all I experience is an occasional lack of sync with the sound in front of the picture sometimes.

Just interested in your suggestions before I phone up Sky and whinge. Certainly won't be renewing if it's my choice. Only took this package because my lad is a serious FI fan and could only watch it if he recorded it because of work.
