Lenses for EOS 450D

Choagy (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 5th August 2008, 11:32

Just got an EOS 450D and would like to add a zoom lens.

I am considering either the Tamron 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Di II LD Macro -(£70 app)

or

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG Lens.(£99 app)

Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Choagy, the prices you mention seem strange. This is the cheapest I know off for a new Sigma 70-300 lens. the lens MUST BE THIS MODEL EXACTLY or it will not be as good. There are similar zooms by Sigma but they are not as good. Don`t buy any lens until you get back to us on this site as it could be an expensive mistake. The Canon 70-300 IS (I have) is much better, it really is & can be bought second hand for about £280-00. But if you get the Sigma it must be the one I`ve shown at one stop digital.

Choagy,

I have seen prices that low for these lenses (even at Jessops!!), they can vary immensely based on what new kit is beings released (lenses or cameras). I picked up a new Sigma 55-200mm Nikon fit for £39.95 at jessops and it`s remarkable for the price.

Personally I think anything over 200mm for those kind of prices might seem great value for money, but they are limited in perfomance at 200mm+...so unless you are nailing the subject to the ground or wall and cementing the tripod in place, it will not be the sharpest.

£80-£150ish for 55-200mm I think is fine for that camera, but any `budget` 70-300 would not do you or the camera justice between the 200-300mm range.

Neil.

I`ve got the Tamron 70-300 for my 350D, while not great it`s worth it as a starter lense as it`ll give you a large range and has macro aswell (not sure if the sigma does this), toying with a Canon 300mm f/4 IS at the moment but not sure I can warrant the cost.

TBH it really depends on what you want to do with it...

If you take a look at my Flickr page below most of my wildlife type shots were taken with the Tamron (for macro shots I use the 90mm Tamron, landscapes etc I still use the kit lens).

Here`s one taken with the Canon 70-300 IS. Doubt if the Sigma will be this good, but it`s good to start with.

f***me thats a cracker Paull.

TBH after £450 on the camera my good lady would have my baws in a jar :D if I spent too much. That said I would far rather get a lens that would serve me well even if it meant a bit more, well another £100 at least. Have to be nice ;) to my good lady , I might even lie on the damp bit :o :D

Cheers fot the info Paull, I will maybe up my price range mate or aim for a good xx-200 mm zoom rather than an xx-300 mm one :)

Choagy did you get the kit lens with the camera. I believe it is better than the old one I had with my EOS400. If price is a consideration (& it usually is) then go for the Sigma lens that I pointed out at One stop digital. It gets very good reviews for the money, but it must be the one on that page. Have you seen it cheaper? as One stop digital are often the cheapest. They are Hong Kong based but I`ve heard nothing but good things about them.

Paull :)

A Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS was supplied/ included in the price and though it is a very good lense, to me anywhooo , I miss a good ranged zoom. I have an old Praktica BMS and I used a 70-200mm zoom regularly and would like to get a similar range zoom.

The Sigma you mentioned is the one I fancy, £97 from warehouse express ?? Have you heard of them ?

Jessops £99.

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro (Canon AF)

In stock in the Stirling shop, collect after 09:45 tomorrow. I fancy this seems like a good starter.
So Paull, yeah or nay :D My £50 Canon cashback pays for half of it :D

If it is dry, I cut the hedges and paint the fences, wooden and iron. If it rains (Pray to god it does) I go to Stirling :D

Choagy, I think you are muddling up the Two lenses. You must get the APO version. The other one is NOT recommended. That`s why One Stop Digital is the cheapest for the APO version. All other places the lens is about £150-00 plus. Better to wait a week & get the better one.
