Page 1 of Some questions for any fellow guitar players....

After too many years of not playing guitar, I`ve recently picked up my Fender again and have started taking lessons. My aim is to become the best I possibly can be, and I`m working at remembering all that I knew before and getting up to speed with everything.

Ideally I`d like to be a very good and competent lead guitarist, as well as dabbling in other areas like blues and classical. However, as I said, it`s all rock `n` roll at the minute, so the first order of the day is to replace the strings.

Can anyone recommend a good set of strings, for my Fender Strat, bearing in mind that I want it for lead guitaring. Further to that, what type of plectrums should I be using?

I`ll undoubtedly have more questions further down the line, but that`s it for the min. Thanks in advance!

That... I`m afraid is a "how long is a piece of string" question... it`s all a matter of taste.

Ernie Ball... D`Addario.. RotoSound.. Dean Markley.. all well known.. all have their fans.... all very good strings.....

have reviews from users about the strings.... I`m not saying use them.. but the reviews may help guide you...

I used to swaer by Dean Markley.. but recently they have been not so good... the last time my guitar was set up a set of Ernie Balls were put on... which seemed ok...

I am currently using a load of cheap unknown USA strings... £2.99 a set.. which are ok.. but loose their tone very quickly...

I am looking at changing to Picato strings.... terrible web site... but when you see who use them....

On the pic front I tend to use Nylon pic`s... they tend to wear out as instead of break... as it happens I use 0.88mm... go to you local shop and try them out... or what about these.....

Yes - I would second Strings Direct and D`Addarrio Strings.

I bought three sets for about £10 some weeks ago and they are excellent

I like ernie ball strings, and alway think that the best picks are the ones that you bed in after a while..

Have you ever thought of using "Gibson" medium strings? I used Gibsons on my 61 Strat in the 60s and they gave me a very nice Fender sound, I use them today and still think they`re the best.

i thought i`d dig this thread up. basically, i was wondering if it was worth lowering the relatively high action on my acoustic guitar? as a beginner, i figured i was better off learning how to hold down chords/barres on a high action but am i just making things unecessarily difficult or do i have the right idea? i`m about 8 months in and progressing ok. any advice is much appreciated.

definitely lower the action.

you`ll speed up no-end and your fingers won`t feel as sore!!

once you have lowered the action, change your strings and check that
the intonation is still ok.
