PSX 2

Smiler (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 6th May 2000, 22:52

I`ve been following the exploits of the PSX 2, and I can`t help wondering that the ability of the PSX 2 to play all region movies is in no way accidental. What`s even more intriguing is how simple they have made for you to play another region`s disc. No doubt the hack was leaked from Sony. Why you might be asking?

Easy. Sales. People find out that the PSX 2 can play Multi-Region DVDs as well as play games. What does this mean, people buy a PSX 2 instead of say a games console and a DVD player. This means more games sale for their console, increased sales in their accessories etc.

And I wouldn`t be surprised if the Microsoft X-Box will have a convenient multi-region hack. And imo, the X-Box looks a lot better than the PSX 2, due to its upgradeability and more support for add ons.

Obviously these large companies can run the risk of dealing with the DVD people who might moan at them.

Thoughts anyone?

I agree that a lot of multi-region hacks are a bit *too* convenient not to have been designed. Although Sony stand to lose a lot of money if they upset the DVD Forum since they are reliant on the said forum to license the logo and decryption keys.

Bang on Smiler!

Most region hacks *are* deliberate by design - they`re there for developers to be able to ensure that what they are coding works across all regions. A region hack is much more conveinient than having one machine per region.

These things are also guaranteed to leek from large organisations such as Sony. It`s not an official leek though, IMHO - if the people in charge found out they would not be happy with the relevant member of staff. But of course they are happy to let it happen, as they know it will increase sales and reduce their costs.

Hmm thanks for the compliment, never know might earn me a column :P

Yeah, big companies like these leaks. Just like Windows 2000 appeared early (I in no way condone the action of buying software), Microsoft don`t care, because lots more people use their OS than would of done.
