ipod question...just bought an ipod video...

retrogeezer (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 2nd June 2007, 18:35

sorry for re-posting this here but I`m getting no replies in the hardware forum so not sure if it`s being seen. Need an answer as I want to play with my new toy!!

I already have a G4 ipod and have a pretty big library on the pc already.

I`ve just bought a new ipod video and wondered if the library will automatically get picked up by the new ipod when I connect it.

I don`t want to do anything yet just in case as I have heard horror stories of people losing all their library.

As always, thanks in advance..

It should be picked up by iTunes and be synchronised with your library. Itunes MAY ask you if you want this iPod synchronising, then again it may not.
You might want to set the Pod to work as a Hard disk, and set it to manual sychronisation.

Mind you, backing up your library might not be a bad idea, just in case......

Personally I`ve got the same kind of problem had an Ipod for about a month (installing my stereo to connect it to the car next weekend, once my exams are done) but I`ve found Itunes to be absolute s***e.

You may be better off using Media Monkey which I`ve been using to sort out my tags and which I`ve used to transfer music without "syncing" my ipod to my mums computer.

You`ll need to have Itunes 7 to use the new gen ipods - I`ve done the same with a video and had no problems. There were some issues with itunes 7 giving computers the blue screen of death but that`s all been fixed now.

All I do is copy the whole music folder to an external drive! Then everytime I add a new cd to libaby I just move the new folder created within the music folder across

Rather than adding another thread, I thought I may aswell add my question here.

Basically Itunes is s***e, but I`m trying to use it because it will log onto my Last.fm charts (supposedly).

Anyway I keep most of my music on an external hard drive and I`ve set Itunes NOT to automatically sync with my Ipod but whenever I charge it, it decides to wipe half the music off the Ipod. The stange thing is some things that are on the external hard drive will stay there :/

I think my external hard drive has probably been unplugged from my computer at some point, but is there anyway to make Itunes only pick up music from my external hard drive?

Maybe i`m mising something, but if i need to import a certain selection of songs into itunes i just select them and drag them into the itunes window.

Sometimes it can be a bit fiddly if they are all in separate folders, however.

I know you didnt ask, but use winamp. It has the audioscrobbler/last.fm plug in, supports Ipods and will automatically scan folders you tell it to.
