Possible eBay scammer: what do you think?

Chris Gould (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 1st May 2007, 13:21

My Mrs put her water damaged K750i on eBay the other day, but the winner withdrew because they were too stupid to read the description and thought it was a fully working phone for £20. Anyway, she re-listed last night and almost immediately it was bought by someone from Nigeria who has offered £30 extra to ship the phone over there. This set the alarm bells ringing. The auction stated that she would only ship to the UK/Ireland, and I`m of the opinion that this smells very fishy indeed. What do the regular eBayers think?

The Mrs reckons that this person has 25 positive feedbacks, mainly from people in the US and Canada. Could they have hijacked someone`s account? She also says she`s had a payment notification from PayPal, but again I`m a bit sceptical...

Wouldn`t touch it with a 40` pole mate.
I`ve to deal with Nigerians/Nigeria on a daily basis in the oil business, using other people`s money, and that`s bad enough !
I`ve heard umpteen stories about how the scam is along the lines of making you think the money is in your paypal account, but it then `disappears` once you ship the item.
I don`t know how they do it,but it`s something along those lines. :/

I havent read any of the above post. I used my l33t speed reading styles to absorb all the text at once and filter out all the interesting words.

As a result I only know that the OP contains the words Ebay and Nigeria. If I were you , I would send him a dog turd by fed ex.

Anyway, the latest ebay method of scamming is to hack legit accounts with unbeleivably english names `DAVID SMITH` then say `BLAH BLAH BLAH MY COUSIN IN NIGERIA I WILL PAY OVER THE ODDS BLAH BLAH BLAH`.

Basically, in case you couldnt tell, I tried to sell a mobile phone over ebay a few months ago and after I filtered out the c***s who were from nigeria or had hacked english accounts (to get around `NON UK BIDDERS`) I had one legitimate bid.

I literally replied `F*** OFF` to at least a dozen inquiries. The funny thing is the scammers get well arsey when you call them out.

As a matter of interest,at what point do people on here ship items to buyers ?
When the amount appears in your paypal account,or do you leave it until it actually transfers into your bank account successfully ?
This can take 5 days, god knows why though.
I tend to ship as soon as it appears in my paypal account.
Am I being naive ?

I only use paypal for odds and sods, so I send as soon as its appeared and never send out of the country.

if its a reasonable amount I usually ask for a gregory peck and send it when its cleared. My bank, thankfully, `only` take 3 days to clear it so its often as fast as paypal.

So long as you *always* send recorded delivery, then this is fine.

So Paypal can make even more money?

I do the same Bowfer, though would wait if I was selling anything over 100 quid or if it was to anyone with dodgy feedback that I hadn`t had time to delete their bid.

The majority of people on ebay are fine, I`ve only dealth with one prick in over 4 years, but then again I don`t sell mobile phones where there are about 10% non-scammers

As NTG said, Ebay and Nigeria in the same sentence is enough to tell you to steer well clear. Report them to Ebay as scammers and relist it (or offer it to the second bidder if it was an auction)

I always mail once payment is in my PayPal account. Don`t tend to get it to my Bank as I spend so much on eBay that it just goes again. :/

Yeah, pretty much what I thought, but I now have some backup to show the Mrs. She`s very trusting and I guess that`s what these tossers rely on. Good job I`m so cynical.
