Sky Digibox Phone Line

Toonarmy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 18th September 2001, 09:05

Am I allowed to disconnect the phone line from my sky digibox? The reason being my 6 yr old son keeps connecting to the new game on open so if I disconnect the phoneline then he can`t! I have been a subscriber for 2 yrs now so I am well over the initial 12 month period. Does it have to be connected for softwre upgrades or is it just for box office and interactive stuff only?

you should be fine to unplug i did before the contract was up and had no problems as for software alot of this is done through the dish but i did have trouble in the very early days and after contacting sky had to plug back in for a few mins whilst receiving an upgrade

I think you`ll find that your contract with Sky REQUIRES you to keep your phone line connected.

However, I know plenty of people who haven`t got the thing in, and nothing bad has ever happened ;-)

I seem to remember when i signed up it just required connection for one year as part of the "Open" subsidised install - after that you could unplug it - but i would assume its how box office works - the satellite link is only one way - though i havnt tried it - i reckon if you try to watch a box office movie without it you`ll not be able to - surley they would have thought of that one... also in the setup menu their is a check phone connection or something, so it knows when it isnt connected.

I remember reading their terms and conditions and the impression I got was that they if they found out you unplugging the box they would contact you to warn you. If you then didnt plug it back in, they may take things further.

So, I guess you could leave it unplugged until they hassle you - unlikely based on the other replies...

Obviously, if you choose pay-per-view stuff, then that`s different and you DO need to have the modem connected.

in the original TOONARMY states that he is out of the 12month period so he should be fine you do need to have the line connected for interactive services I.E box office (but @ £3 a pop it`s too much for old films anyway) and also for the open side you need it connected to order anything upgrades to software can 90% of the time be done thru the dish
bye 4 now
