Sky considers free Sky+ strategy
Wednesday, August 17 2005, 11:21 BST -- by Neil Wilkes

Sky is mulling a plan to offer Sky+ free to all new and existing customers, according to a report in The Independent.

The move, which could cost the company as much as £1 billion over the next three years, is seen as a way of increasing subscriber numbers further towards the 10 million target set for 2010.

The Sky+ service currently costs £99 for the PVR set-top box and, depending on the package taken, a subscription of £10 per month.

"Getting to 10 million homes is more difficult when cable becomes more of a competitive threat," industry analyst Paul Richards told the newspaper. "Sky+ is a superb product. Giving it away would cut the churn rate and be a big plus for adding new customers."

He added: "Having 10 million Sky+ homes [in 2010] is obviously more valuable than 3 million with Sky+. It is a case of short-term pain for long-term gain."

Watching this with interest.

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

I`ve just been seriously considering the basic 19.50 package, as they`re offering free equipment and installation until August 1. Not sure about sky digital, as quite frankly, I really don`t want that many channels (I`m not into sports and any movie their channels show I`ll already own, or, indeed `own` ;) )

But Stanz, this is August 18th today. You`ve missed the deadline.

Anyone who`s in two minds about getting Sky+ I just have to say do it - you will NOT regret it, particularly if this offer does prove to be true. I`ve had it for about two months now and couldn`t be without it.

Stantz,

I would go for it. I only got Sky so I could watch the Le Mans race on Euro-sport every year. I never thought I would watch the number of documentary`s I do on the many factual channels, watch M*AS*H on Paramount, or Drop the Dead Donkey again and find it still So Good. All the sci-fi shows on.. well the Sci-Fi channel, some bad, but others good, Secret Army again, this time on UKTV Drama, Hamish Macbeth, the comedies on UKTV Gold. Finding you like Two Pints of Larger and a Packet of Crisps; on BBC3, and the best comedy show the BBC has.

You find yourselves watching shows you had forgotten, shows you didn`t think you would. Becoming addicted to Sky News or News24, cringing at Fox News from the US. Be surprised at how little time you spend on the old Five channels you once had.

Does this mean that those of us who paid around £250 for our Sky+ earlier this year will get a refund? Like f%&k it does. >:(

Having said that, Sky+ is the most fantastic, incredible piece of machinery EVER and I pray to the great God Murdoch on a daily basis that he allowed me to purchase such a divine piece of kit. :x

Have to agree Sky+ is excellent. However - you can get it virtually free at present - ring their cancellations dept., they`ll offer a `refurbished` (most probably new) box for £49 - sell the old box for £40 on Ebay - jobs a good `un.
