Best Musical Score or Film Music?

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 14th April 2001, 00:35

Royd`s thread on worst movie music set me thinking. Who`s the King of Film Scores? John Williams? Jerry Goldsmith? John Barry? James Horner? Miklos Rosza?

My nominees are:

John Williams for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Jerry Goldsmith for the Main Themes to Star Trek:The Motion Picture (1979), The Theme from The Man From UNCLE (1964) and The Mummy (1999)
John Barry for "007 and Counting" from Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

`THERE CAN BE ONLY TWO` (forgive a near pun to Highlander)

JOHN WILLIAMS FOR JAWS. without this all we`d see was a very badly designed plastic heap of crap being kept affloat by divers and inflatable lilo`s!

ANGELO BADALEMENTI. for just about every film score he ever composed, to many to mention but lets go with TWIN PEAKS.

In my opinion these two stand alone. The kings of composing.

Trevor Rabin`s score for Sixth Day was very impressive, a fresh sounding mixture of traditional and technological themes. Jerry Goldsmith`s music for The Mummy was perfect aswell, very "fantastical" and perfect for the highly fictional, but fun film it supported. Where`s Brad Fiedel disappeared to? T2 is one of the best soundtracks ever (like the movie or not). His stuff really supports what`s happening on screen and doesn`t get carried away with melodies and harmony. Building tension and setting the scene are just as important as memorable tunes.

Got to get in hear and put you scoundrals in your place.

Patrick Doyle`s haunting theme to Donnie Brasco is beautiful it chains together as one long piece of music yet changes perfectly with the changes in the movie.

Snatch....Yes snatch guy ritchies choice of music is brilliant in this film From Golden Brown at the start to the finally which is brilliantly played out with Oasis Nookie in the bushes.

The score from last of the mohicans is excellent and is brilliantly pieced to the pace of the final scenes, the theme to millers crossing is actually the same piece, this piece was also used in the caffreys adds a while back.

A li`s Ride with The Devil is an underated movie that also has an excellent film score.

Henry mancini`s theme to lifeforce is also a goodin:)

Anything done by John Williams especially "Saving Private Ryan" & I also quite like James Newton Howard`s "Sixth Sense" score.

Just watched `Sleepy Hollow` for the first time tonight - Elfman`s score is fantastic - dark and brooding, and not too intrusive
