SuperSize This! McDonald`s Profits slump by 71%

Fast food giant McDonald`s saw profits at its 770 company-owned UK restaurants fall by 71% to £23.6 million in 2003.

Quote:
The group said the fall was "entirely due" to a restructuring of its financial set-up but added that it had experienced a "challenging couple of years".

Yeah Right!

I guess it`s nothing to do with the fact that their food is jam-packed full of high saturated fats and that one movie-maker (Morgan Spurlock) has highlighted that fact soooo much they`ve pulled their Supersize options.

Do you think that McDonalds are finished?? or are you still going to stuff those BigMacs down you `till your liver fails??

Personally, I think Morgan Spurlock is a moron who proved absolutely nothing in that film of his, apart from proving the old adage that people will do anything to get on TV.

No-one, in their right minds, would eat fast food for every meal. When the premise for the film was revealed, British MacDonalds managers appeared on the News clearly stating that anyone who constantly eats nothing but fast food (of any kind) is going to do themselves a mischief.

The fact he singled out McD`s proves he`s got a chip on his shoulder about the clown. If you were to eat Pizza hut, Dominoes, KFC`s, subway etc constantly for a month I`m pretty sure the outcome would be the same.

We KNOW fast food is bad for us, Morgan. That`s why we like it so bloody much

i thought it was because more people were buying their lunch from the likes of m&s, pret and numerous other coffee shops. that`s why they introduced salads etc - doesn`t matter anyway, `cos i think they own a substantial share in pret a manger. if you can`t beat `em....

"but they allways seem packed out so business can`t be that bad for them."

But once they`ve killed there customers, who will go there then.

As a Vegetarian there is only one choice for us, the Quorn burger. This gets a bit boring so we don`t go too often. If there`s a mix of veggie`s & carne`s then they will avoid Macdonalds because of the choice for the veggies so they will go somewhere that gives both a choice.

Lastly if you order chips the (suposedly healthy ones) are smothered with salt, very very bad for you. If you could add it yourself (or leave it off) that may help with there sales.

To sum up, they need to be still more healthy than they claim to be, they need to give a wider choice for vegetarians etc, supply chips with NO salt on. That`s for starters.

When I grew up - I had no idea that McDonalds was bad for me!! I was just a kid and MaccyD`s was the treat of the century. My Mother even told me that the Fillet O`Fish was more healthy than a burger - so I ate them (they have more rubbish in them than anything else).

McDonalds was thrust on me - advertised to me, I wanted those Hamburglar toys or Ronald cars. So no wonder I grew into an Obese kid - i was taunted at school - called things like Blur (as in what`s that Blur in front of me).

I`m now an adult who eats healthily and goes to the Gym 5 times a week and i`m normal. I haven`t eaten McDonalds in 5 years.

Only recently (5 years) have people realised that this food is not good for you - and suddenly McDonalds starts to make salads and low-fat flat breads. too little too late.

Morgan Spurlock used a gimmick - for sure - but the story was a relevant one. I hope McDonalds lose their legal battles and that 71% drops by another 29%. The world is a worse place because of the likes of them.

Oh! and for the record the same applies to KFC, Pizza HUT, Dominoes and Burger King.

Regards,

A Very lean and tender

A moron? Super Size Me, as a documentary, points out clearly that the experiment is nothing more than a Unique Selling Point. It`s a sub plot almost, as the film goes into a lot more detail about fatty food in general and American culture. It`s a very well made programme and at no point does Spurlock come across as a "moron". I think he highlighted the dangers an unhealthy lifestyle quite clearly, and you`d be surprised to find the number of people who don`t think about what they eat and would quite gladly eat fast food all the time. If I had stopped eating fast food ages before this film came out, I certainly would having seen it now (although I have no objections to an emergency stop at McDonalds for a quick snack, maybe twice a year or something)

.

It`s obvious why he picked McDonalds, they`re the biggest and most recognisable. It also helped support the section about kids and education. He did mention the other fast food chains too, but the experiment wouldn`t have been as talked about if it wasn`t strictly a "McD`s" diet. If you want to see a man with a chip on his shoulder, go check out Michael Moore and his "factual" films... at least Spurlock was convincing.

Although I don`t think his film is responsible for the huge profit drop, but it did make an impact none-the-less.

And Quorn isn`t even vegetarian (battery eggs - and the mushroom stuff is GM as a bonus :)).

The *bread* at McDonalds isn`t suitable for vegetarians, and they got sued by a load of Hindus in France because they use beef lard for the chips and it doesn`t say anywhere.

Burger King are better for veggies - the bean burgers aren`t veggie as they`re cooked with the chicken (but are veggie in ingredients I think, so it depends on pickiness), but the veggie whoppers (especially the old recipe) are *yummy*.

There are many foods that are bad for you...many foods that are good for you, but anything good or bad is bad for you if thats all you eat...everything in moderation surely? There was a woman on the news not so long since in a story about childhood obesity and her VERY fat kid was sat next to her. she said `we are cutting down on the fatty foods, we only go to Mcdonalds 3 times a week now...` 3 TIMES??!! and you wonder why you have a fat kid? :/ I probably go to Mcd`s 3 times a year. I know I eat too much of the wrong kinds of foods, I`ll be the first one to admit it, I enjoy a KFC or a pizza now and again but I dont live on McD/pizza/KFC/ etc like some folks do. McD doing salads and low fat food is too little too late in my eyes. If you want to eat a healthy meal there are far better places to go than McD`s and far cheaper...
