DVD ON PS2?

cutz2000 (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 3rd April 2001, 20:10

One thing, is the Playstation 2 making the most of its DVD capabilities?
I recently bought ZOE (in laymans terms Zone Of The Enders) and even though its a great game its very short. This game could not have filled a DVD so why bother with the DVD drive on the PS2.
Same with the demo discs and not to mention Timesplitters which was very short as well.
Now I realise that there maybe one or two games which are Big (eg. MGS2) but when are they REALLY going to start to take the DVD part of the machine and push it to its limits?

BY THE WAY IM SORRY TO HAVE TO SAY THIS BUT, I RECKON MY MATSUI DVD110 IS A FAR SUPERIOR DVD PLAYER THAN THAT ON THE PS2, Frendlier menus and Multiregion plus it plays Vcd`s.

You are right there, a lot of PS2 games could probably be released on CDs instead of DVDs. That would be cheaper.

There is no need to be sorry! Most standalone DVD players are better than the PS2 really, it is after all a games console and not a DVD player.

I agree with all that you say. AYE!

It stands to reason, really - the DVD playing section of the PS2 is nothing more than a nice bonus, equivalent to the music CD playing capabilities of the original PSX. It isn`t as good as even a basic standalone deck (and without a multi-region mod is decidedly limited in its usefulness), but it`s OK if you just want to watch the occasional film.

Anyway, I thought most PS2 games were on CD rather than DVD? Even if they were on DVD, the cost increase would be marginal.

Think ahead guys!

as the games get better they will get bigger as well (Final Fantasy?)

also

the PS2 uses the ESS4408FD which has a built in DTS & DD6.1 decoder so it`s certainly better then the wharfy.

Don`t forget also why Sonny put DVD capabilites on the PS2, for the Asia market. This is predominatley VCD so Sony were trying to speed up the move towards DVD.

Well, l got a Dreamcast, and l think SEGA really screwed up marketing this baby. l ignored the machine since it arrived last year and only picked one up because my wife liked Sonic (she played it once at Christmas, thats it!) but this is a great machine much better than l would have guessed. Going real cheap now, l`d advise anyone to pick one up.

l got a Matsui 110 and, its execellent!

Except that Dreamcast is now a dead technology. Sega have announced that they are getting out of the hardware market and are just going to be producing games (for PS2 and others) from now on. Dreamcast is a decent console (worth buying for Soul Calibre alone - it`s the best fighting game on any console imho) but if you want to buy one be aware that it`s going to have a fairly limited liftspan for new titles.

If you`ve got a PS2 though - buy SSX. You`ll be glad you did.

i have a Dreamcast as well as a PS2, but to be completly honest the quality and originality of the games on DC are way better than the PS2, Now that Sega are developing for the PS2 and rumours about some of Nintendos gaming machines, Gamers across the globe WILL come to realise this.
I read in some magazine away Months back (i think the summer last year) that SEGA had a plan for the future, this was:
1- Totally reconstruct SEGA Enterprises to become the number one games developer for all platforms and build trust among gamers that SEGA is quality.
2- Keep this going for at least 8-9 years.
3- then BOOOMMM, Sega are going to do a shuffle and convert back to making consoles and release a Super console to blow any competition out of the water.
4-By then Sega will have built up a large member of followers such as PSX has who should take fancy to SEGA`s box of wonders.

IM NOT SURE WHICH MAG I READ IT IN BUT I DIDNT BELIEVE IT THEN, BUT NOW THAT SEGA HAS CHANGED, MAYBE IT IS TRUE!

MATSUI 110 ROCKS!
