Page 1 of How easy is it to string an electric guitar?

I need to replace a string on my guitar, and as I`m only learning to play I`m not experienced in this sort of thing. Is it easy to do? Also is there a good place on the net to order these sort of thing?

It`s not too difficult. I`d recommend that you either take it to your local friendly guitar shop, or at least seek the advice of a friend in the know, so that you pick up the right gauge string (it may even be worth replacing the whole set). They may even show you how to string it, while you`re there.

Once you`ve seen it done, you should get the hang of it without too many problems.

as per Sput2001, replace the whole set, they only cost around £8.

if you just replace one string you`ll notice how "bright" it sounds
compared to the older strings.

get yourself an electric tuner whilst you`re at it.

I`ve got an acoustic and electric, Ive had them for years but Im impatient so wouldn`t practise enough I find I cant quite bend my fingers properly I think Ive got a wonky hand,I thought Id try to learn again and stick to it. How long would you recommend I practise for a day and realistically how long should it be before I can play a basic tune(reading music was also a hard thing to learn..I`m hopeless, Springsteens got nothing to worry about)

Rich, if you pay £8 for a set of strings it`s too much, your local shop shouldn`t charge you more than £5-£6 for a set of Fenders, ask for a set of 9`s or 10`s (It`s the thickness of the thinnest, E string), but i`ll post on here a site to get really cheap strings, including Fenders later today. By the way, as you practice more and more you develop `calouses` on your playing hand ("That`s enough smut Jones minor...............and pay attention at the back!"), and you`ll find playing notes and chords much easier. Keep at it, and don`t let anyone put you off.................It`s the most fun you can have with your clothes on! Roger.

Yeah stringing guitars is easy, it can be a little bit fiddly but its really straightforward and the sound of new strings is brilliant. Only thing is new strings go out tune quickly, so you`ll probably have to re-tune every time you use it for the first few times.

Rich - just a wee tip
Allow for a couple of windings around the tuning peg - the extra grip will help your guitar stay in tune better.
Then again you might have a locking top nut?
