Has Christmas Lost its sparkle?

Gavski (Elite) posted this on Friday, 5th December 2003, 10:51

I don`t know how you guys feel but do you think Christams lately has lost its sparkle and magic? (not marks and spencers!)
Is it because they start too early now?
Or is it cos i`m older?
Things dont seem the same and I try to get excited and jump around the town but it doesn`t work anymore...does anyone else feel the same?
I`m told this will change when you have kids as you do it all for them....

Since I got married it`s become little more than an endless trawl around the country visiting relatives` houses getting bored out of my head. I really can`t be arsed with it any more...

I can sympathise with that. Most of job is spent driving around to different places. What does my misses want me to do on my time off? - drive her around everywhere to visit her family :(

Christmas has gone WAY too commercial these days. Shops round here had Christmas stuff in them at the end of October!

I thinks it`s because we`re getting older. This chritmas I am skint. stoney broke. All I will be getting off the wife is 1 dvd. The same for her.
Chritmas, I think does seem to be starting earlier and earlier every year. I think we have almost become the 51st state of America.

Chritmas day isn`t so bad. I have 2 familys to visit, both are stocked to the gills with free food and booze, so they will numb the boredom... for the most part though, I find it fun being with the familys, especially when everyone is full of "chritmas spirits". I don`t drive, so the wife does all the hard work. :-) I get from the 24th till the 29th off. kinda looking forward too it.

BUT

yes. It`s coming too early, and it`s too damnn americanised for my liking. It`s Christmas not Xmas.

Christmas lost it`s true meaning years ago, firstly it nothing to do with Jesus and neither is Easter come to that, they are both pagen festivals hijacked by Christians years ago, now it`s been hijacked by the commercial world.

Take a trip to ASDA a few days before and see the trollys stacked high with enough food to end a third world famine, and ques that could rival the great wall of China for lenth, and all for two days of what..Somthing called Christmas.

We can all look forward to the suicide rate going up in January and all those unpaid bill, yes folks Scrooge was right!

Infact Xmas is the more properist way to say it. I can not back that up as I can not remember where I heard it. You will just have to trust me on this.

All the best,

I`m worried. Usually we throw ourselves into the season of goodwill with a vengeance, but this year getting the place ready has been a grind. Doing the Christmas shopping hasn`t been fun, putting up the decorations has been a slog - especially with two sets of tree lights packing in - and we`ve all been grouching at each other at a time we normally set aside for quality family time together.

Christmas was a drag for me but I now have 3 kids & tend to get as excited about xmas as they do. Cant wait to see their faces on xmas day when they open their prezzies - they`ve been totally spoilt again :)

Only 19.5 days to go :)
