ladycool (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 2nd February 2001, 15:59

Hi again Comrades,
I have a problem, I bought at auction on yahoo my first vcd for my son called the grinch..
Try as hard as I can it will not play on my sons dvd player, grundig 210a, remote hacked to multi-region.
I think this is not an original vcd but probably a copy, will it never play vcd copys??
Any advice welcome.
Thanks guys & gals.
Regards.
Jane

What makes you think it`s a copy? This, if it is could
well be the problem. What auction?

Some DVD players do not have the facility to play VCD, check your manual for the player. Also I have found that if the VCD is a different colour from Silver (so could be a copy) it won`t play either.

Jane, this is easy to tell if it`s an original or a bootleg copy.
Look at the "play" surface of the disc.(the non-label side)
It should be silver, just like an audio CD.

If it`s green/blue/different colour then you have a CDR copy of the disc.

Firstly, no, the 210 cannot play CDR, therefore that wouldn`t play if it was a copy.

However, I`m not entirely sure that it CAN play VCD anyway. Try doing a search on some of the other models that use the same hack to find out if any of them have a "vcd" enable hack (like the one for the Matsui 110)

It`s not always a burnt CD that makes it a bootleg pirate, I have seen totally pirate disks that are pressed in Thailand. They even have the title written in the itsy bitsy writing on the hub of the disk, I`ve found the packaging usually the best give away.

However these pirate disk I`ve described should play like genuine disks.
(If your equipt can handle that format)

Yes the Grundig can definately play vcds but they have to be original`silver` copies and not ones done on a pc..ie..cdr copies of a film.

Grinch on original VCD ? I don`t think so. It`s definitely a bootleg. It takes at least 6 months for a movie to be available on original VCD after the cinema release. Many DVD players can play VCDs. Some will not play CD-R, CD-RW though.
I would recommend all the VCD sites listed above except for the last 3.

www.vcd.gs sells illegal discs. And so does www.videomas.com
Look carefully at some of their cover images. And you`ll see what I mean. Maybe that`s why they SEEM to have the best prices.

Stick with the other sites and you can`t go wrong.
