REGION 1 IS THERE ANY POINT IN UK?

MAD Jazpa (Competent) posted this on Friday, 12th January 2001, 23:37

OK before I start to get the customary slagging off, I`m new at this DVD lark OK?

I have the Toshiba SD100E and whilst looking around this web site it appears I will have to have it chipped to make it R1. But is there really any point? Any DVDs I rent will be R2, perhaps 99.9% of DVDs bought in your local DVD retailers will be R2. I know you get the odd film thats 30 seconds or 10 minutes longer because of the censorship difference or whatever but does it really matter that much.

If I`m missing a blatant obvious point to all this, please forgive me.

Surpised im the first to break it to you.

R1 (american) DVDs are better in many ways:

Cheaper (especially if bought online)
Wider range (there are some films that you can only get on R1)
Better Extras (alot of DVDs have more extra material on their R1 release)
Available sooner (you can get a film from america and import it over here before said film is even in the cinemas at the side of the atlantic)
Cencorship (does not play that much of a role these days but some american cuts of films are better than others)

There are other advantages probably, and also some disadvantages, but I cant be arsed listing them all. Too much strain on my brain. My brain hurts!

R1`s get released usually a lot sooner then R2`s as they where shown in US cinemas alot earlier then over here.

STuart Little came out on DVD in the US the same time it came out on the cinema here!

Many films including british one are available on R1 and are not out on R2 with no release date for R2 pencilled in either.

ie Long Good Friday, Last of the Mohicans and many more!

Also sometimes the R2 version is not anamorphic but the R1 version is (e.g. 12 Monkeys).

Then again sometimes the R2 version is anamorphic but the R1 isn`t (e.g. Truman Show)...

Multiregion is not just about R1 vs R2. It`s worth looking at the other regions including european versions of R2 discs.

This probably seems like a really stupid question, but a Region 3 will definitely play on a Multi-Region player won`t it?
I suppose I`m just being over-cautious because of the fact that you can`t send back DVD`s that don`t run on your player.

Region 1 is definetely worth it. I just bought Me Myself And Irene At a computer fair, Region 1, and I have no idea when its out here. I am however still wondering what anamorphic widescreen is. I dont notice any difference, someone tell me please...

Yep, that`s right Yangshouwen. So, does anyone know the anser to my question?
