Best way of getting traffic to a web site?

clarets (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 5th April 2003, 07:51

I have recently started my own business, what is the best way of getting people to my site. It is financial services/ Mortgages etc.if that matters. The site makers said they would submit it to search engines every 3 months, can I get near the top of the list instead of being # 10201250 of 10201251.

Thanks in advance

Adam

Advertise yourself sneakily on finance/mortgage forums (are there any?)
Go into chatrooms and advertise. Think about paying popular sites to advertise on their site etc.

Unfortunately it`s not a quick and easy process to get near the top of search engine listings - unless you are prepared to pay.

I use Webposition Gold software to `optimise` my website to make it more appealing to the search engines, but it takes a bit of work on your part and can take several months for some search engines to show results. Continually re-submitting your site won`t necessarily help.

Take a look at http://www.searchenginewatch.com/ for detailed info about the search engines. It`s a whole specialist area in itself.

This crap about getting your web site high on search engines by paying people to do it is very annoying. Its not how many things make it look attractive, but things such as KEYWORDS, ALT TAGS and DESCRIPTIONS. I run a movie review web site and we get lots of hits on our reviews. On Google we usually appear on the first page of hundreds.

Granted, you will want people to visit your homepage, but just make sure you get as much stuff as you can. I use Dreamweaver 3 and it allows the easy addition of the three main things I mentioned.

Alternatively just stick a little editorial on it somewhere talking about "Young Lesbien Teen" band Tatu and people who watched the Vin Diesel movie "XXX"! :) Watch the hits go up...

Mind you not many of em would be interested in a mortgage! :D

Chewie - I never mentioned anything about paying people to make your site look nice so that it appears high on search engines. I`m talking about optimising your pages so that the search engine algorithms rate your pages highly according to their criteria. Making your pages look nice has nothing to do with this. I know what I`m talking about, my business sells on the internet, it`s not a hobby.

Alfie

I was responding to this:

"The site makers said they would submit it to search engines every 3 months"

I happen to have known "site makers" that make a really s*** job of putting sites together. Sure, they can make fancy graphics that will appeal to the viewer, but as I said in my last post, keywords, alt tags and descriptions are what will get you high, especially in Google (and Yahoo!).

If you sell on the internet then you`ll know more than me, but I`m talking from experience.

I haven`t paid anyone. I`m usually in the top 3 (out of "about 278,000") on google.

Adam

Be careful about resubmitting regularly - some search engines will look for this and demote you if you try to submit too often.

Google tend to rank you according to the number of links to your site as well as the content, metatags etc. Get your URL on as many listings as possible - you may have to pay for some of these, but if they`re specific financial advice sites, it won`t do any harm - and it`s all tax deductable :-)
