Who else has been naughty (or offensive)??

sj (Elite) posted this on Monday, 10th February 2003, 19:14

If I ask if someone is really someone else and say "it sounds like it", is it offensive?
More offensive than jokes about paedophilia (alleged) apparently.

Your posting (and the others posted here) amounted to a personal attack on a fellow forum member, which will not be tolerated.

Thus, I deleted the thread all together.

There is a mechanism in place for complaining about fellow Forum members, and that`s to contact us (it`s at the bottom of every page).

Starting your own witch hunt against the person (which your opening thread invited people to do) is NOT the right way to go about it.

If you think I`m being heavy-handed, I`m sorry.

Similarly, if you had a problem with the other thread, complain to us as well. Cuts both ways - what if the person you were complaining about started attacking you personally on this forum ?

Ste, your comment elicited a load of "follow up" postings which were not very nice, hence the reason the thread was deleted. The standard e-mail that was sent to you maybe wasn`t the most appropriate, but there isn`t one that says "posting a totally irrelevant observation about someone which spiralled into a load of personal abuse from other users about a fellow forum member" so the "offensive" one was the nearest.

Mr X - I`m just doing me job, guvnor.

I suggest you both re-read the forum rules, especially :

(1) "Flaming" is defined as a personal, malicious or judgemental attack on another person or on the forums in general, and will not be tolerated.

(2) Forum Admins and Moderators are giving up their free time to provide this site for your entertainment, and that of other Internet users. They are not power-crazed God-monsters who apply their powers without good reason. Respect their presence, and don`t use it as a reason to pick a fight. Be aware that Moderators do not need to explain their reasoning, and their decision is FINAL.

Remind me when other people start making unjustified comments about you both to not intervene ;-)

Now, can we consider this matter closed please ?

I know how you feel Clayts, I`m a host in MSN chat rooms and there are days where I will be `verbally` abused just because I`m a host. I get called a Nazi, Hitler, a `sad geek on a power-trip`. Just because I`ve chosen to spend a bit of my free time trying to make the chat rooms a nicer place to be.

Then, when I kick or ban someone for breaching the Code of Conduct (which everyone agrees to upon entering the room) I`m abused even further. Normally, I`d let it get to me, but I`ve had nearly every insult ever made thrown at me, but I gain solace in the fact that no matter how sad I may be for volunteering my time hosting these rooms, there is always a sadder soul who spends his free time trying desperately to make everyone he comes into contact with think he`s an absolutely friendless moron

(incidentally, that was not a remark aimed at anyone on this forum. I`m just letting off some Hosting steam, the counsellors say it`s good for us...)

Clayts,
OK mate fair enough. Can you please get another `reason` for thread deletion added to the system as you suggested ;o). Think your suggestion is fine.
I thought that by some of the posts I`d read, there really was a possiblity we were being wound up again.

Case closed.

PS do you still get the milk in those pyramid cartons?

Stantz,
Next time somebody uses the terms Nazi or Hitler to describe you, you should remind them about "Goodwin`s Law". This old Usenet rule was established by Professor Goodwin in order to signify that anyone mentioning Nazis or Hitler in a discussion that has nothing whatsoever to do with Nazi Germany automatically loses the argument.
