DVD Forums suspend their Bargain Forum

clayts (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 5th November 2002, 21:48

DVD Forums have had to take the decision to shut down their Bargain Forum for the day due to Littlewoods taking possible legal action (not necessarily against the Forums, I hasten to add) due to misappropriation of Littlewoods vouchers and the fraudulent usage of them, details of which were e-mailed to customers, and then rather foolishly splashed liberally over the DVD Forums.

This also followed a rather dubious thread about discounts at CD Wow, with one member posting a workround for a special Vodafone/MPay £3.99 rebate scheme. I took great exception to this and (presumably amongst others) reported the thread to the Administrator, Colin, who promptly deleted the thread.

Us moderators often have to wheedle out dodgy referrals in the Bargain Forum here at `Reviewer, so don`t think we are being overzealous in doing so. Littlewoods are apparently vigorously pursuing this fraudulent misuse of limited promotional vouchers, and DVD Forums (whilst presumably not legally responsible) may have to provide information to them about who posted such information.

Let this be a rather scary warning to all of us here at Reviewer.

I`m sure we wish the DVD Forums team well : I hope there are no ramifications for the site, even if they are loosely our rivals.

To be honest clayts, I think you guys here do a better job of moderating - you`re firm when you need to be, and you don`t take any crap, but you`re also fairly hands off. A good balance, I feel.

The problem with the cdwow thread @ the forums, is that 2 of the mods got involved, and seemed to endorse it. They certainly didn`t close it, despite being well aware of its existence (and have now been relieved of their responsibilities accordingly), which is possibly why the site`s admin has come down so hard after being made aware of the problem. It`s unfortunate that such a thing had to happen.

I think that the repercussions for Reviewer will be slight - there seem to be fewer of that sort of posting here, and the bargain forum is much quieter than over there - indeed, a lot quieter than it used to be. Is this because `dodgy` threads are getting picked upon sooner?

BTW, I read your posting in the relevant thread in their General Forum - I don`t think you`re cast in the role of `bad guy` here. Far from it! I would have said Dan B or RJS ;-D

i wondered where the bargain forum had gone. this could set a precedent really, which i hope it doesnt. the authorities and relevant parties are obviously aware of `fraudulent` goings-on via the internet, so as clayts has said let this be a warning to us all personally and also in that there are no ramifications for informative and useful websites such as this one...!

Clayts i also read your reply on DVD forums, when are you the bad guy? youve helped me out loads, and i see you as an allround nice guy. Mind you in saying that you did have to lay down the law a bit recently in the consoles forum. LOL

Blimey, hands up if your favourite colour is brown.

I hope this makes people realise a bargain forum is for bargains and not criminal fraudulent behaviour.
