Page 1 of Xbox 360 Help

Hi,

I am thinking about buying a 360, currently own a Wii but fed up of games that don’t take my fancy, and the 360 had loads I would like.

Would probably go with the Elite cos it seems only a little more money than the premium for allot more (also have a friend who works at HMV and can get me an Elite and 2 chart games for £270), but I have never owned an Xbox and when I started looking into them I have read horror stories about overheating.

I understand that a 65NM chip might be on the way, or already out. Does anyone have any thoughts on this and would it be worth holding out for a 65NM chip, or is it already out? will it run cooler? Or will the current chip be ok and not run into overheating problems, perhaps this problem has been fixed on the Elite?

Depends on your definition of `a lot` I suppose. You`re only really getting the bigger HDD and the black finish for your money. You get an HDMI slot, but they`re going to be rolling them out on future baches of premiums. I`d certainly plump for an Elite if I were buying a new 360, but you`re not getting masses over the premium. Launch Elites certainly don`t have better innards than your stock 360, and are just as likely to suffer problems as garden variety models. If anyone tells you different, they`re talking out of their arse.

A 65NM chip is on the way, but it`s part of the usual console manufacturer cost-cutting drive on hardware; it isn`t being purposely inserted to make the console any less prone to overheating and it`s not a new model per se. It should make it run quieter, though. They`ll probably start to appear in machines towards the end of the year, but people won`t know until they start rolling out and the tech-heads pull the machines apart. Don`t expect a PR/marketing exercise from Microsoft when they appear, as they`ve never claimed there was a problem in the first place, and the updated insides are, as I said, simply part of the continuing process of making games consoles cheaper to make.

It`s actually the secondary heatsinks that are cutting down on the problems. They`re putting them into faulty consoles to stop the chipset coming away from the motherboard, which is essentially the cause of the `Red Ring of Death` issue. They don`t apear to be putting them into the Elites though, which is why there`s the same problem with them.

The RROD problem is overblown (internet = megaphone), although it`s certainly an issue (as you can see among the small 360 userbase on here). But the `figures` say you`ve got a 66-70% of never experiencing it (yeah, should be around 95%), and if you do, MS will fix it within 3 years, which is the time-frame it will invariably happen in if it`s going to happen, unless you only use it once a month.

Yeah, what he said. The 360 dieing is an issue, but at least Microsoft are swapping all of them, so the only inconvenience is losing your 360 for a week or so. Not ideal, but not the end of the world either (just adding that because people seem to be thinking of not buying one "incase" it fails)



My DVD collection

All new 360`s have the new motherboard which was the main cause of problems and a 3 year warranty so buy with confidence! Besides.. where else can you play Halo 3> :)

They stuck a new motherboard in mine when I sent it off and it was the DVD ROM playing up!



The reason I don`t have a Wii? It`s just a Gamecube which makes you tired quickly.
