Anyone bought Monthy Python`s Holy Grail or Life Of Brian yet?

Gaz Kitch (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 13th December 2001, 09:51

I already have these fine films on Vhs and was thinking of updating.

Just wondered if they were worth getting on dvd? I have heard that there is going to be a better version of "The Life of Brian" coming out later next year..............does this apply to "The Holy Grail?".

Advice appreciated.

DO NOT BUY THE CURRENT R2 LIFE OF BRIAN

Apologies for shouting but it`s important that you don`t since it is complete pants - a 4:3 transfer and no extras.

If you can`t wait for LoB (and it is heavily rumoured that a proper release will come out in the New Year when the rights are transferred to another company), then the Criterion version is very highly recommended. It is NTSC, but it is R0 - the details of the disc are on this site, but I`ve not got round to posting a review yet!

As for Holy Grail, the recent Special Edition released in region 1 is absolutely brilliant - although there have been some compatibilty issues with various players. As it`s a Col/Tri release it is likely that the same version will appear in R2 in the New Year, but I`ve not seen anything official so don`t quote me.

Agree with comments re HG - R1 a cracker - converted my wife to commentary tracks!

Actually, I have both the Criterian version of Life of Brian (which is fantastic for the deleted scenes and the radio adverts alone) and the recent Holy Grail special edition.

Now as far as the Holy Grail goes I`ve had a few problems. I have a Wharfedale 750.

The first copy I got had the subtitles popping up every now and again. Apparently this was a common problem with an early batch so I exchanged my version. The replacement is even odder. If you press play it shows the Bob Monkhouse film "Dentist on the Job", but you can access Holy Grail by simply selecting scene one and watching from there. Very odd, but I should be happy with two films on one disc! However, I haven`t examined the rest of it yet to make sure all the commentaries and so forth are there, so it could be going back again!

Unfortunately I received `The Life Of Brian` from Mr Clause !. It`s definately a 4:3 transfer with no extra`s!!!. I might try & flog it to somebody & get the criterion version.

The opening from "Dentist on the Job" is supposed to be there, it`s not a fault.

The subtitles problem occurred on lots of players.

If you`re desperate for R2 LOB, then the Danish one is anamorphic 1:1.78, and has cast & crew list, plus theatrical trailer. Only thing is the cover is in Danish...
