Surround sound help (particularly wireless speakers)

Hi all

I`m about to move house and I`ve talked the missus into letting me get a surround sound system.

Does anyone have any recommendation for decent affordable systems, particularly systems with wireless back speakers (I`m talking around the £200-300 mark at the most).

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Cheers

Paul

New DVD player - Samsung DVD-HD850 or Toshiba SD360E?

Hi

Please excuse the lack of technical know how, but I`m looking to replace my 7 year old Wharfedale (for which I cannot complain about value for money really) with a DVD player that upscales through HDMI onto HD ready TVs. Reading through various websites I was lead to believe the Toshiba one was the one for me, but now I`ve read about the Samsung one and I don`t know who to believe!

I only want it for watching region 1 and region 2 dvds, and maybe some DVD-Rs if I ever get round to burning any.

Does anyone have either of these players and would you recommend it? Or is there a third option lurking about to confuse me even more. One of the main reasons that the above 2 have made my list is the price of around £80 each, with hdmi lead included apparently.

Thanks in advance.

For Sale: Film magazines

Hi

I`m trying to clear some space and I have loads of film magazines for sale if anyone wants them (and are close to north London to pick them up).

I have every copy of Neon magazine, every copy of empire magazine, the first 49 copies of Premiere UK magazine and the first few copies of Total Film magazine.

I would prefer to sell all the copies of each magazine as a set, so please let me know if you`re interested.

Thanks

Paul

Freeview hard drive/dvd recorder help please

Hi all

I`ve finally lost patience with Sky+ after my sixth box. They only last 6-12 months and then wipe everything off the hard drive and stop recording. This is followed by the usual row with their customer service team to get an engineer and replacement box without having to pay more money.

As most of the channels we watch are available on freeview we are thinking of getting this. So what I want to know is does anybody know of a good freeview hard drive recorder, with dual tuner and dvd rewriter included. There seems to be a few knocking about around the £400 mark, but could anybody recommend the best one.

Cheers

Paul

Disney DVDs

Does anyone know the next release dates of the Disney DVDs that have now been deleted?

Laurel and Hardy help

I`ve bought the 21 disc collection and the recent definitive collection, but could anyone tell me the best of the rest to buy (both their films as a partnership and their solo shorts) to add to these.

As the films are mainly in the public domain there seems to be countless collections and I presume the quality varies, but I just really want to know the best versions to buy to add the films that are not in the other two collections (eg, Babes in Toyland, Bonnie Scotland, The Devil`s Brother, The Slippery Pearls, etc).

For Sale: For sale: film magazines

I`m clearing space and have piles of old film magazines for sale, all in excellent condition. I don`t really want to split up each set, if at all possible.

Empire - issues 4 - 193 (3 missing)

Premiere UK - 1st 49 issues

Neon - Every issue

Total Film - 1st four issues

Hotdog - 1st 10 issues

Simpsons comic - about 25 different early issues (first few Simpsons comic, first few radioactiveman, first few bartman, etc)

Non-film related also have a stack of around 60 viz comics (from 27 onwards)

If anyone is interested please e-mail me an offer. I can arrange postage for all but Empire, which would need to be collected from North London.

Help needed re downloading music

Hi all

I`ve just purchased a new pc with a cd writer and I`m planning to download some music onto CDs. What I want is your opinion on the best sites (napster, etc) for doing this. I`m interested in a site with a wide selection to choose from, as well as ease of use.

Anybody?

Help choosing DVD player required!

Hi all

What would you recommend as the best budget (as I`m pretty darned skint!) multiregion DVD player that is capable of playing RCE discs?

RE: Anyone bought Monthy Python`s Holy Grail or Life Of Brian yet?

Actually, I have both the Criterian version of Life of Brian (which is fantastic for the deleted scenes and the radio adverts alone) and the recent Holy Grail special edition.

Now as far as the Holy Grail goes I`ve had a few problems. I have a Wharfedale 750.

The first copy I got had the subtitles popping up every now and again. Apparently this was a common problem with an early batch so I exchanged my version. The replacement is even odder. If you press play it shows the Bob Monkhouse film "Dentist on the Job", but you can access Holy Grail by simply selecting scene one and watching from there. Very odd, but I should be happy with two films on one disc! However, I haven`t examined the rest of it yet to make sure all the commentaries and so forth are there, so it could be going back again!

RE: Wharfedale upgrades - lies, I tell you, it`s all lies!

Thanks.

I`ve just tried that but the guy on the helpline says that they will only send out the upgrade in respect to the Jaws disc, and as I swapped my Jaws disc for a Region 1 copy I`ve no chance. I did try to explain to him that the upgrade also apparently fixes LA Confidential, but he said their advice from Wharfedale was only regarding Jaws!

I suppose I could buy another copy of Jaws, get the upgrade and then take Jaws back to HMV and swap it for something else!

Would you know whether there`s been a case of anybody contacting Tesco and asking to swap the entire DVD player for the newer version?

RE: Wharfedale upgrades - lies, I tell you, it`s all lies!

Mmm, I spoke to a guy at the helpdesk this morning and he said there is only an upgrade that will help with the Jaws problems, but not the LA Confidential, and after I read your posting I rang them back and spoke with a lady who says there are no upgrades at all for the 750, only the 750s!!!!!

You say Wharfedale confirmed it, does that mean you contacted them? If so, you wouldn`t still have their number would you?

Wharfedale upgrades - lies, I tell you, it`s all lies!

Thanks chaps for your round up of the different Wharfedale models. I bought the 750 when it first came out and have suffered the problems with Jaws and LA Confidential. I swapped Jaws for a region 1 copy and that works fine, but I still have the region 2 LA Confidential.

I called the Tesco helpline, but contrary to what it says in your article they have no upgrade which will solve the problems with LA Confidential,it is only the Jaws problem that can be rectified. Unless, that is, you know something thet Tesco doesn`t.

Anyway, as I said, the region 1 Jaws works fine, so I was wondering if anyone has a region 1 LA Confidential and whether that works okay with a Wharfedale 750.

RE: Region 1 Jaws works perfectly with Wharfedale DVD player!

no, mine is one of the earlier players

Region 1 Jaws works perfectly with Wharfedale DVD player!

Erm, I think that just about says all I need to say!

R2 Jaws problem with Wharfedale

Has anyone else had trouble loading R2 Jaws on a Wharfedale DVD player? The Universal logo comes up and then the system crashes. I`ve replaced the DVD but the second one did the same.

Has anyone got a R1 Jaws DVD and a Wharfedale player? If so, does that play okay?
