Simpsons R1 boxset display glitches?

RichardH (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 27th September 2001, 15:04

Anyone else found that some of the episodes on disc 1 look like they`re underwater - a bit washed out and blurred, but only in some scenes? I also noticed in the night time bits on Moaning Lisa, when she`s jamming with the sax player, the sky was really wobbling. Other scenes with similar blocks of colour in the same episode look fine. I`ve not ventured past disc 1 - I`m supposed to be working (so no I`ve not been drinking).

I`m using a Cyberhome 512, set to PAL (my TV doesn`t do NTSC)

Only seen the first 3 episodes, but i have noticed that on 1 and 2 some times the pictures looks abit jumpy. Im displaying ntsc as pal as well so i`ll try it on my brothers player as that is ntsc as ntsc

l havent watched mine yet, but if you remember, or if you dont know, Simpsons series one was quite low quality artwork compared to the more recent series. l`m pretty sure it often looked washed out etc.

As l said l havent watched mine yet, but that would be my guess.

Sorry to upset you but after reading this i had to check out mine and to be honest i cant see any problem with the colour and i checked the scenes you mentioned,
Only problem with mine is that bender and fry was not in it, still i hav`nt got long to wait for that.

Yeah, it`s a funny one - only seems to be night skies that are affected by the wobble/shimmer - now seen it in another episode too. Classic episodes, though!

It`s a shame there isn`t a "play all" option on the first two discs - all this menu interaction confuses the kids! Can`t imagine our 3 year old (who`s quite happy sorting the video out) doing all that - maybe time for a backup to VCR...

My disc 3 seems to be a bit jumpy. It even froze on the Tracy Ulman part. Still not too bothered as the episode are OK.

Still for £18 - excellent bargain

I must be lucky...my discs are all ok just a bit blurry on the first couple of episodes. i just put that down to the standard of the animation

My set seems fine, I flicked through most of it to check it out and watched disc1 and 3 fully, I would just say it was the animation back then, at some points though it seems rather computer graphics styley, blocky lines, but as i say I reckon it was just the way they animated in 89 and 90, looking forward to Season 2 already. Does anyone else have the odd freezing of the cyberhome machine, mine tends to just freeze and none of the buttons will do anything, unless I pull the plug and plug it back in, It does not happen that often, but it can be anoying, It always happens with VCDs, when they finish it locks up. Does anyone know if it plays RCE as well, I want the Goonies, but I want to make sure it will play first.
Thanks
Ben

Yeah, I think it must be the animation standard - as you say, some lines are blocky, but on other scenes similar lines are fine.
No, I haven`t had the freezing prob with my Cyberhome 512, but haven`t yet tried VCDs, so can`t say whether that works.
I don`t have any RCE discs, but because you can set the region manually to R1, you shouldn`t have any problems.
I believe the 528 doesn`t even need to be set to R1 to play RCE titles - this may also be true of the 512, but they do have different chipsets.
