Muncih

Barold (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 9th February 2006, 22:04

Went to se Munich the other night and just wanted to say that it`s the best film I`ve seen for ages....... probably best since Sideways.

It`s far superior film-making than Brokeback Mountain, which I thought was good - but didn`t really go anywhere after the first hour and a half (apart from flashes of their twice yearly `get-togethers`)

I really recommend that everyone on the forum goes to see Munich (be warned though Spielberg doesn`t hold back on the violence/gore - however I felt that this gave the film a more realistic/documentary feel and was a key aspect of the film).

As I said above, really is a superb film (would love to hear a Spielberg commentary on the DVD - highly unlikely though!!!)

The problem I have with Munich is that as much as a well made film it is, for me it was `entertaining`. I like to be entertained at the cinema and this didn`t do that, it was too hard-hitting, cold and depressing for me.

Assume you meant "wasn`t `entertaining`"?

I thought it was brilliant, and it has been criminally overlooked by some people (lack of award nominations, with the exception of the Oscars). I only really found two aspects that didn`t work mainly because they felt like a cliche and were there for that reason alone:

SPOILER:
The paranoia near the end was rushed and unconvincing for the most part, and the Cronenberg sex scene was unwarranted.

Apart from that, brilliant. And...

SPOILER:
The bit where they kill the female assassin/prostitute is highly unsettling

Great, powerful stuff!

I thought that it was desperately poor stuff from Speilberg, who seemed unsure whether he wanted to make a serious, `issue` based film or a taut thriller. In the end, it was neither and seemed badly put together. I didn`y know whether to laugh, cry or get irritated by the historical inaccuracies; the sex scene at the end in which Eric Bana was having flashbacks to an event he didn`t even witness was just ludicrous. The only reason I can think that it`s even received nominations is that it`s a `serious` Speilberg film and he is a Hollywood favourite who generates a lot of money for the studios. It`s no Schindler`s List and the little faith I have in the Oscars will disappear completely if Speilberg walks away with a golden statuette.

You`re right, because Munich is a better film. Schindler`s List puts everything at the surface, and there is even that horribly executed "girl in red" moments. Munich is far deeper rooted and less obvious (although hardly subtle).

Why take it so literally? The sex scene, I thought, was a mistake in the way it was shot and only done as a contrast to the earlier sex scene in the film (which is not enough reason in my humble opinion). But the "flashbacks" are just images. These events have given him the life he has, changed it forever. He never saw anything, but I know that personally I imagine events that I didn`t witness all the time. There is nothing ludicrous about it.

I guess we`re going to have to agree to disagree on Munich, Chewie. You know what I think (it misfires badly and is worse than SL, which isn`t that good to begin with) while you practically think that it`s a great film and a potential (and worthy) award winner. But then, I don`t like the Star Wars films, considering only `Empire` to rise above mediocrity whilst you love them to bits; as the saying goes, `chaque un a son gout`. :)

Even with my A* GCSE in German and the help of the internet, that sentence doesn`t seem to make any sense - should it? Or why are you commenting on `stucco`? :/
