Friday the 13th which version/s to get??

555 (Elite) posted this on Monday, 4th October 2004, 20:56

I only own Jason goes to hell & Jason X, so have been looking to pick up the earlier movies, although on 1st viewing IMO not as good as the Halloweens/Nightmares i still like owning all these horrors, so can any1 advise me on which version i should get of Friday 1-8, i no there is a set coming soon of them all on R1, should i get this?

Have seen it advertised on Play & in mags for £40 i tink. But i only order from CDwow & they dont have it. Is there any difference between R1 & R2 versions of the movie?? I have seen them for sale in HMV for 5.99 each, which is £48 for da lot, is this worth it? or should i get da R1 set when i can find it?

all help apreciated!

All the US versions exist as R rated cuts with bits missing, which are the versions Paramount are releasing in the box set.
I`m not sure about 2-8,but Part 1 is fully uncut and the UK dvd is longer than the US release, and also the first time the uncut version has been available for around 20 years,as Warners big box rental version was uncut, but the certificated version from 1985 onwards was the R rated cut.

Psycho surely?! Or do you mean it to be pronounced pie-sko! ;)

Seriously though, I have been looking to get the Friday 13th and Halloween box sets for a while so am interested in what those `in the know` think is the best version(s) and where to get them from.

EDIT - Play have the Halloween box set available for preorder - it seems good although it does have the appalling Halloween: Resurrection in it.

The gore is all there is to the F13 films,so to see cut versions is a bit of a waste of time. The Halloween box does not have the extras disc with the 90 minute documentary that accompanied its earlier release. And its reported that Halloween 2 is in the wrong aspect ratio.Buy the US disc for the correct one

The R1 version is cut.All the R1 versions are cut,so its not worth buying.A UK release of the complete series is unlikely as Warner own UK rights to the first one,and Paramount own the rest.Your best bet is to get the first one on R2,then record the rest from Sky,who have been doing marathons in recent months.

Halloween III is still cut in this country, so best get the R1 edition, also try and get hold of Halloween 6:- The Producer Cut on E-bay.

In the box Friday the 13th pt 1 doesn`t have any of the extras that were on the UK re-release, commentary & documentary. However 4 of the films have new commentaries and the 5th disc of extras (which i`m not sure whether it may contain parts of the doco from pt 1 or not, not had time to watch it yet).

I thought some of the films were cut on R2 as well, i have a hotchpotch of R1 & 2 discs including 3 versions of part 1 now after buying the box!

The thing you should know about the box is that the discs are all single side dual layer with two films per disc. I haven`t had time to compare them to the original releases but i thought the picture quality on the paramount r1 discs was pretty good but i cant imagine the would compromise this new release in any way.

It should also be noted that in a recent Fangoria interview, it was stated that the box represents the most complete version (film and extras) at this point [which it obviously doesn`t given the commentary on the UK pt 1] and should be considered a work in progress. Meaning that in a couple of years there`ll probably be another one.
