PROBS WITH ALIEN QUADRILOGY

MADTheOgster (Elite Donator) posted this on Friday, 26th December 2003, 19:18

hi, a friend of mine got this for chrimbo and is having loads of problems (pausing/skipping/stuttering) so far he`s only tried disc 1, so i`m wondering if anyone else has had similar probs, his machine is a pacific 1002w (same as mine, initially thought it may not like branched disc`s but mine play`s the abbys ok)

thanks in advance

Older and cheaper players often show their true colours when it comes to sophisticated discs with seamless branching etc.The Abyss was quite cool when it came out,but the Alien set is possibly among the most packed discs ever.2 versions, both with commentaries(if R1)and it will be branching at quite a few points aswell.Things like this do cause problems on some budget players. However, thats not to say that cleaning the disc(if problems persist in the same place each time)will not cure it.Try it on your player.Try other discs, and probably the easiest is to swap the set and find which place causes problems then play that from a new set.Apart from dirt ,scratches etc, chances are the skipping pausing will occur on another set.
If you are familiar with the movies,do you know whether the skips and pauses occur at branching points?

i know the branching points on the abbys (r1) and it plays them flawlessly also another disc that caused loads of problems with many players when it came out (including many samsung players) was x-men (prt 1) now, i dont remember if thats branched or not (r1 disc) but it played perfectly, as have all the discs i have tried so far, i`ve had the player for a few months now) unfortunatly i won`t see my friend who`s having the problems till next week so i`ll have to wait to try the aliens box set.

also my friend said alien skips and freezes etc during the breakfast scene and i don`t think there are any branched/extras there (could be wrong tho as i don`t have the box set (yet))

Sounds like the only solution is to try a new set and see if problems occur in the same places

Im having the same probs with the Alien quadrilogy set...my dvd player is quite old (LG dvd 2330P) its skips, jumps and misses out whole chapters of the disks, I thought it was maybe the disks as Ive had very few problems with the machine over the years but I tried the disks in my computer and the dvd player on that plays all the disks with no problems.....think its time for a new player... :(

I had the same problems with my Samsung S224 player but it wasnt the discs
it was the player
the player was fairly new.about 1 years old played fine up until 1 hour 8min on disc one
(alien directors cut) then stopped started lost sound
tried them in my moms player(reoc A3) they play fine so ive had to swap players with my mum

I have not checked, but 1 hour 8 minutes sounds like the likely place for the layer change. Its unlikely that your player would only have problems on one disc if its picky about layer changes.Prepare to hear from your mum

i have a rather old Goodmans player that is very picky about its discs. but i have watched the spec editions of Alien & Aliens & they wer fine, but when i went to watch the extended cut of Alien3 after the layer change every few minuted it decided to mess about, i had to just give up.

You say pyscho like its a bad thing
