Can I get the original Star Wars trilogy with anamorphic widescreen and DD 5.1 ??

Hulk Smash! (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 8th June 2003, 17:08

I know editions of the original trilogy currently available won`t be "official", but are there some really good discs out there (eg. 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS sound)? If so - where (and how much!)?

Yes, they are Dolby Digital 5.1, and it is good. But the DTS is crap. And while the picture is indeed 2.35:1 widescreen, it is NOT anamorphic. There has never been an anamorphic release. The DVD`s are ripped from the the Laser Discs released in 1997.

I got mine from eBay. Hope that helps.

Thanks chewie! Was yours the "5 Star" collection - there seem to be a few different versions floating about! (what`s the average price?)

The offical "Star Wars" release will NOT have a DTS because Lucas dislikes it. That`s why Indiana Jones, despite a Spielberg film (one of the people to push DTS) only has a DD5.1 track.

Ok, you people! Sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we`re not back by dawn... call the president.

Yes, mine were the 5 Star versions. I consider these the best (although "Empire Strikes Back" has sound issues with the DD 5.1 track, but there is a very good Dolby Surround track, so its still good). Others (Chris ;-) ) think the "separate" releases are better. Certainly, "Empire" doesn`t have the sound problems, but I still prefer the 5 Star collection overall.

As for price. Well, I was patient, and only placed a bid on the cheaper auctions at eBay. I managed to pick them up for £20, which I thought was an excellent deal. But I`ve seen them go for $100 before on the American site. I wouldn`t pay anymore than £30, because if you do you are being ripped off. Then again, its your money. Also, if you go to eBay, don`t buy anything from anyone that has less than 15 positive feedbacks, with a 100% postive feedback rating. I`ve heard there are some bastards that take your money and ship nothing.

:)
I know i jumping into a old subject but I had to put my 2 cents in

There are 2 versions of the 5 star that are dual layer(dvd) The Malya (gold cover version on ebay ) this version has several audio flaws on the dts audio track (this audio track is known as a p-dts audio track ) the second version (gold and black cover with a silver bar and a halo 9 symbol on it ) has the same problem but not as bad ..I prefer this set out of the 2 (5 star sets ) also it looks better the artwork is not as chessy and this version comes from singapore .....

The best i have seen is a single layer version from Malay (d5) it has the same menus as the 5 star but the audio flaw has been fixed(the p-dts audio track was removed ) this version was slated for direct import to erupoe (ilegally but how cares ) thats how it got its
Pirate name of eruo star wars ....The next set i came acrosss was a d5 set from Malay
that had a dts audio track awsome quality but low bite rate and EMPIRE THE DTS WAS NOT IN SINC!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH when are they going to get it right!!!!!! it was like watching a bad chinnese dubbed movie ...overalll the video was 10/10 and the 5.1 dolby
was 10/10 but the dts was crap...the menus on this set were diferent THEY DID A GREAT JOB ...they were not the 5 star menus all new stuff ...ohhhhhh yes the best of the best before i forget the eruo version # 2 this version was the same as the first version
it had a correct audio set up no dts and it was released on a dual layer dvd if you must own the star wars sets or just one I recommend this version !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could go for hours on other versions i own in my personal collection
I have several from Hong Kong and my most prized version is the original theractrival
release not the special edition aswome dvd with alot of extra features the overall dvd
pic quality is about 7.8/10 the audio is about 8/10 the only flaw that really got me was the fact that they put it on a d5 single layer

please reply if you know of any others that i may have forgotton also is there a area here were we can display pics of thses dvds for commnet???? I have menu shots and pics I would love to display ....please not I wish not to sell them here on the forum just share what i have with all of you

Thanks

Just to add that these aren`t the original trilogy - they`re the inferior special editions.

I`m really hoping that Lucas will include the originals. As long as he does that he can f*** about with them all he pleases on a seperate disc!

No, he also has the original versions. As for the quality, there`s no way any of them are 10/10. They aren`t a patch on the best DVDs out there, although they are as good as some non-anamorphic NTSC releases I`ve seen. In any event they`re better than VHS.

I have the DVD5 versions with the screwed DTS track on Empire. Now I have a DVD burner I`d love to get my hands on the original editions again, to see if I can remove the bloody annoying pauses (reason I sold my discs). I wouldn`t mind having a go at trying to re-author the five star disc with a working DD 5.1 track either, but I`m not sure my authoring skills are up to that yet ;)
