Whats` your favourite home demo scene, you know when someone comes round, and you just want to really impress them, crank up the volume and watch their ears bleed. Myabe not that loud...anyway, I`ll start I suppose. An obvious one maybe, but a gooun none the less, the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, very loud.
So post your favourite scene

Saving Private Ryan is a classic demo scene, especially that DTS version which rather worryingly distorted my speakers the other day :S

Star Wars Episode I pod race scene is another good `un.

Plane crash in Castaway is another favourite for some reason, mainly because it`s all quiet and tense then the noise hits you out of nowhere.

Not one to blow the doors off, but watch your visitors try and keep a straight face as they witness the creepy goings on in Signs!!

The bit outside the house where the alien is running around the roof is a cliche of the surround art, but implemented so well people actually begin to look around just to check...

Oh, and for the visual AND sonic experience, show someone the `Whirlwind` Sequence from Shaolin Soccer towards the end of the movie - the look on my friends faces just at the sheer lunacy of it all was classic! :-)

CLASS!!

Haha. Shaolin Soccer. The most ridiculous movie ever and yet hilarious. Although I think one must be a Stephen Chow fan (or at least be familiar with his style) and understand cantonese to fully get the jokes.

Actually, is there like a DVD demo disc or something that is solely aimed at pushing your sound system to the max and demo every aspect of it? Something like a very long THX intro to movies or something. If there is one, I`d like to get one. :)

There is an official THX disc, which sadly cannot be purchased anywhere except for ebay where copies fetched upto $500. I kid you not. I have a copy thanks to a good bloke in the know, (name protected), and it has the age old, but still great, 7 minute THX WOW! trailer, which has bits from Star Wars, Willow and Indy, all in either Dolby or DTS. The fidelity has aged a little, but none of the impact has gone at all. People who`ve `experienced` it on my system at home just sit there with a dumbfounded look on their face.

One of the most imaginative trailers is the T2 one, very moody and cleverly implemented for 6.1 sound,(should you have it).

Fight Club`s Dolby Digital Surround Ex is also utterly outstanding - even today. There`s so much thought gone into the mix the whole film just seems to collapse without it, (in an audio sense obviously - it`s still superb on mono tv!). The plane collision has and always will be one of the sternest tests of the dynamics and surround precision of your system. If you can hear the shattering glass `move` around the room with the cameras movement you`re onto a winner. And if your sub is any good, the massive, growling bass as the plane hits pockets of air should roll and thud, not just be a mess of boomy bass :-)

Where would we be without it eh?
