RE: Back to the future trilogy

Well, I too received my copy on the Monday.

Only got around to watching it this weekend...

On a Sony 36" Wega with da Bomb of a 5.1 surround system (biggest woofer I`ve ever seen).

Watched all three movies in a row. DTS. Damn good quality.
You can see what a good job they have done cleaning it up when you watch the `deleted scenes`.

Top quality material, top quality film. Classic. (Apart from the third one, but we wont mention that, will we. ;-)

RE: Amended : ANTIQUE Mac Clearout

Heh, I might get one of these `old` macs.

My Atari ST has just about had it, and I`ll be needing something else to prop my doors open....;-)

RE: WHERE WERE YOU GUYS

As an aside...I don`t want to sound like a pimping whore, but...

Everything we hate about computer-hacker movies. You see this stuff in most Hollywood computer films.
I thoroughly recommend the PC Game "Uplink". (Read their website and follow the links to all the reviews of their game on/in other websites/magazines)

It is a game about hacking and uses, to great effect, all the sh*t from Hollywood Hacker movies, that people hate.

The guys publish it themselves I think, so you have to order it from them.
http://www.introversion.co.uk

£19.99 inc. Delivery. I lost 2 weeks solid playing this game.
And at that price, it`s a bargain.

RE: Nvidia GF4 Ti 4400 128Mb DDR for £189 inc vat

Yer the Scan prices are inclusive of VAT.

And as for the ATI, well, I`ll let support gather for their cards - let `em work out the issues in their drivers before I consider getting on of theirs...

First nVidia card I bought was the GeForce2 Ultra, cos until then, I wasn`t satisfied that nVidia had things nailed down, and at that point the Voodoo cards were the standard.

RE: Nvidia GF4 Ti 4400 128Mb DDR for £189 inc vat

Scan...
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/vga.htm

(All prices including VAT)
"128Mb ASUS V8440 Ge-Force 4 DVi" - £195.05
"128Mb Chaintech GT40 Ti4400 Ge-Force 4 DVi TV Out" - £183.30
"128Mb MSI GF4 Ti4400-VTD GeForce 4 TV Out/Video In/DVI" - £175.08

Although personally, I`d pay a bit extra for the ASUS quality.

Or for a real bargain....

"8Mb ATI Expert @ Work" - £23.21 Cheap and Cheerful.

RE: 1700 xp processer for 61 inc vat and 1800 for £71

Or Scan...

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/cpu.htm

1700 - £67
1800 - £73

Or Overclockers

http://www.overclockers.co.uk

1700 - £64
1800 - £69

Personally, I`d go with Overclockers. Top bunch of guys.

RE: Hong Kong Legends DVDs for £8.99

I have most of these and the top 4 would have to be:

Drunken Master,
Drive,
Snake in Eagle`s Shadow (aka Snake`s Fist in Eagle`s Shadow).
Magnificent Butcher.

I would recommend also, "Legend of a Drunken Master", the follow-up to Drunken Master.

Just my humble opinion

Bargain Forums (A little OT)

I read this forum almost daily, as its a good resource for money-off offers.

However, I`m sure a lot of you are subbed to other forums of a similar nature that cover more than just DVDs.

Could people perhaps let on to the forums they use for bargain hunting (games, pc, consoles, dvds, electrical, anything).

Cheers.

RE: Cheap used N64 consoles

Jeebus... relax, did you note the ";-)" at the end of the first line?

I was just joshin` ya.

I`m sure it`s an excellent service, but a software sales company that exists over the phone and nowhere else is a company I don`t trust.

Good value games though...

RE: Cheap used N64 consoles

...and how long does it take `Big Ben` to burn off these Dreamcast games, hmmm? ;-)

Besides, if you can get one, the Sega Saturn is a bargain right now.
There are some damn good games for it, and good ones still being released (not very often tho).

Dreamcast - again, great value second hand with cheap games - classics like Dead or Alive 2.

N64 - Cheapo games from the boot sales.

I always buy stuff when the public loses interest.
I have the full set in the attic - Atari 2600, ZX81, Spectrum (48, 128, +2, +3), C64, Amiga (500, 500+, 1000, 1200), Sega Master System, NES, Sega Megadrive and a SuperNES (I skipped the Amstrads and Atari ST`s, as these were the poor man`s alternatives at the time). I still pull them down once in a while...

Nostalgia isn`t what it used to be...

RE: Cheap used N64 consoles

Where is your `local`??

RE: Starwars II: Attack of the Clones... at CD-WOW

Agreed - "Insensitive"?

Yes, what happened was a tragedy of immense proportions.
But I`ll be goddamned if every major celebrity and company didn`t up their own PR riding on the events of that day. Companies that didn`t fall into line with the massively over-sensitive media-hype would be subject to peer pressure and criticism from the mainstream media.

I`m just glad that I`ll be out in the mountains of Spain during that period so I don`t have to listen to the self-congratulating, hypocritical BS media frenzy that WILL take place.

Before you flame me for this, I am not the bad guy. I feel for the people involved with that tragedy. I really do. It was horrific and wrong. But it was treated wrongly and the media manipulated people`s reactions (and I`m not talking here about the families of victims/survivors).
All you need to do is look at incidents such as the release of the Spiderman movie. They delayed release in order to re-edit sequences to do with the Twin Towers (or so I am told). Why? Fear of the bad PR that the mainstream press would subject them to.

If you ask me (and I know none of you are), they should have left them in. A tribute to the wonders of American engineering, pioneering and united effort, seen by millions. Hiding them away is tantamount to sweeping it all under the rug.

And like I said, I am sure glad I won`t be around when they lift the rug up so celebrities can raise their profile by doing `charity` appearances.
Of course, my sympathies will be going out to those families and survivors that are forced, by this overwhelming pressure by the media to re-live the unimaginably horrible events of last year.

</rant>

Ahem. Lost it for a second there. Anyway, I would probably go with CD-Wow. So far, they have been very quick with delivery and the customer services seem very helpful.

Peace.

RE: 4 port USB Hub - £4.69

Paull: Are you getting a little confused between an Ethernet Hub and a USB hub?

USB Hubs allow you to hook up more than the standard 2 USB devices (Mice, Joysticks, scanners, etc) to your PC.

Network hubs allow you to, well, er, network. :)

Oh, and anyone that has a LAN in their house and is still running 10MB/s, SHAME ON YOU!! ;-)

RE: Sony Notebook Cheap - Reality Bites

I`m all for bargains as much as the next man.

But some of the attitudes on here. Jesus.
Welcome to the real world people.

So, they posted what appeared to be a bargain.
£76 for a Sony Viaio Laptop?? Surely not!?

For the idiots among you, let me enlighten you as to the train of thought followed by the few of us with some common sense:

"Wow. A Sony Viaio for only £76. They must cost more than that to make. I`ve never seen goods like that advertised at such a ridiculously low price. I would guess that a price like that is a mistake. Maybe someone did it deliberately out of spite. Maybe it was a software error. EIther way, it has to be wrong. I`ll buy one, but if nothing comes of it, well, I guess I could see that coming."

Now. All you whinging pillocks. This company experienced a problem. You all took advantage of it (I didn`t because a:- I could see it was a f***-up, and b:- I didn`t see it till yesterday). Good for you.

You didn`t get anything.
Now you want something.
As I see it, you all want some kind of financial compensation for acting like a pack of vultures.

Well, you are getting what you deserve. This isn`t the Dixons group you`re buying from. It`s your average online store.
Why not try putting yourself in the manager`s shoes?

"Oh sh*t! There`s been a f***-up! We didn`t do this deliberately and now we have to do something about all these people that took advantage of us and now want some kind of compensation! I know Kodak did something similar, but they only lost about 150quid on each camera. 30,000 people all after one of these laptops means that we lose 30,000*1000 quid!! We didn`t ask for this!!"

I do not see this `Forbis` as some kind of evil presence that deserves our wrath. They just made a mistake.

You got what you deserve. Why not just accept the fact that you were wrong to take advantage, get your money back from Worldpay, go home and consider it a lesson learned.

RE: hmv sale revisited - no, don`t run away! some new info

I haven`t seen that site. I`ll have a look when I get home tho`, cheers.

I also use under18.org (now called DVDSplash, or some such, havent been there in a while). AFAIK, they started the whole "Hong Kong legends bargain bucket" thingy.

And as for region coding, well, I play my discs through my PC cos I have it set up in the living room hooked up to the telly. Also, I can speak Cantonese, so I don`t need subtitles. ;-)

RE: STAR WARS EP2

Yeah. There were some light-sabre noises, some light-sabre fights. There was a smattering of droids.

But the lack of acting ability made the whole thing just another showy special FX platform.

IMHO, Yoda was the best actor in the film.

RE: hmv sale revisited - no, don`t run away! some new info

No offence caused, Kang!

Just saying. I have a "Master with Cracked Fingers" too and other such titles (Sammo Hung`s "Magnificent Butcher" - chuckle).

Admittedly, I would pay no more than a tenner for these. But a tenner seems good value. One of the better ones was "Legend of the Drunken Master". I recommend that one...

RE: hmv sale revisited - no, don`t run away! some new info

Hey! Easy tiger! I`m not a die-hard Jackie-Fan, but I have a lot of his more obscure titles which I did NOT buy in a sale.

At the least they are a good culture comparison.
Look at how the focus of the film changes from the Hong Kong originals to the `Rush Hour` films today.

At the most, they are fascinating action films - some of the kung fu s*** he does is quite spectular and in my humble opinion is far more applause worthy than a 30-man, 3-month effort to use computer graphics to render a guy in a super hero costume leaping between buildings.

So there you go. Now for some breakfast...

RE: ET Collectors edition £11.70

Dude, I wasn`t being cynical, or accusing you of spamming, or anything like that! And yes, I am aware of DVDSoon (although I generally go for region 2/4 DVDs for the Super-duper Uber-fantastic picture quality. PALtastic! ;-)

I was just saying that the way you phrased it made it sound like a bad spam mail, or perhaps one of those get-rich schemes you see in magazines with fake "I made it work for me!" messages from the likes of `Bob from Wiltshire` or `Mary from Devon`

Try not to be so defensive, lighten up. Treat life as a bit of a joke... you`ll never get out of it alive! ;-)

RE: ET Collectors edition £11.70

"And many more - ... Since I discovered this company 2 weeks ago, I have ordered 70+ DVDS".

Why not add like 20 plings (`!`) and write that in capitals...

"At first I thought it was a scam, but soon I was earning OVER £300,000 EVERY WEEK!!!!!!!!! Call now for your FREE information pack!!!!! (p&p £40)".

Heh. Not having a go, but you sound like a bad spam advert. ;-)

RE: HOW CAN I WATCH MY PC DVD ON MY TV????????????????????

Macrovision will not affect PC->TV output unless you have a crap TV or try to run the signal thru a VCR.

Put simply, Macrovision is a squarewave overlaid on the video signal. Televisions miss this squarewave and carry on displaying the signal. VCRs however, are more sensitive to this (for recording purposes) and when the signal is passed thru a VCR, it becomes corrupted. You can spot macrovision corruption as the symptoms are obvious (but varied): Colour shift, loss of vertical-hold & screen flicker, although it does depend on the equipment you are using.

I use PC->TV (36" Sony Wega) for watching DVDs as my PC is in the same room and I rigged a remote control system into the front panel.
It`s simply a case of "Display Properties" from the control panel, to enable the TV mode of the Gfx card...

Hope this helps...
