RE: multiregion hack mikomi ds8668

Hi,
Became a bit frustrated with my machine so tried some guesswork. All I`ve managed to find is that pressing 1234 with or without the tray out gives a display in the top left hand corner of 05.00.02.05

I`ve no idea what it is, perhaps a version number?

Bye.

RE: multiregion hack mikomi ds8668

Hello,
Just bought one from Argos recently and haven`t found a multiregion hack so far.

Any luck, other owners?

Starry Night - Complete Space & Astronomy Pack Version 6 (Software PC/Mac) - at Lidl

Hello All,
This planetarium software is going for £11.99 (generally seems to be £30 elsewhere).

It`s the basic version of the software including a dvd with some space tours and guys talking and also a cd with a basic astronomy pdf book (three discs in all).

The other versions of the software being Enthusiast, Pro, and maybe some others - all going up in price of couse.

The latest version is v 6.2 but the Lidl version can be updated free by a download from the starry night web site.

I didn`t get a chance to do more than load it onto my pc. looked similar to the free planetarium software I use, Stellarium, but seemed to run a bit slow.

I`ll have a closer look in a few days time and decide if I`ve made a good purchase or not.

Lidl are also selling a small refractor telescope and two types of binoculars and some kiddy space software (DK brand).

Bye

RE: Free IPod Stuff

I`m impressed by the conduct here.

A very civil exchange of views.

I was expecting a punch-up to start.

RE: Cheap external storage 250GB USB/Firewire from £15.64

Hi All,
Got the same stock "Very sorry......" email as others have.

So that`s it.

It was exciting while it lasted.

As I said in an earlier post in my grown-up voice, I`ve saved myself £23 and that`s a bargain in itself.
(Boo hoo.... waaaah !!! I want my toy !)

RE: Cheap external storage 250GB USB/Firewire from £15.64

Hello All,

I`ve received two "email recalls" from dell yesterday, not long after they sent the "cancel order" email. I guess they`re trying to recall the cancel email.

Errrr... now I`m confused, did they cancel my order then have second thoughts and decided to honouring the order??

Looking at the order status at dell I get "Unfortunately your order has not been found".

I think I`ll just forget about it and just keep an eye on my bank account.

Good luck and Regard Everyone

RE: Cheap external storage 250GB USB/Firewire from £15.64

Yep,
It`s gone.

Did the same search I did half an hour ago for the device and it`s not coming up now.

I`ve received the first email from Dell, but don`t know if the second email will arrive now.

Oh well - it`ll save me £23 if it`s stopped.

Hi,
Just tried to get one myself, seems fine so far.

I`m just waiting for some emails back from them now.

Thanks for the information bytemaster.

Yep, the larger screen version is mentioned in the link above - branded as Goodmans.

RE: Goodmans 40Gb Personal Media Centre - £59 from Goodmans Direct

Hello All,
Received my poor man`s Archos last week so I`ve had a little time to play wth it.

Dumped 2000 small jpegs to it.
Recorded directly onto it from dvd, video and TV using the timer, about 20 assorted items.
Put a bunch of mp3s onto it.
Tried the voice recorder once, just to check it worked.
Haven`t installed the software onto my pc - couldn`t be bothered.
Haven`t converted any video files for it - don`t have any to convert.
Haven`t used the SD card slot

I only bought it as a personal video player to fill in those idle moments and because it`s a shiny gadget - mainly because it`s a shiny gadget.

The dreaded loss of lip synch does appear occasionally but goes away when I pause play, I can`t remember if it turns up again later on. But it seems not to happen, so far, if I use the "button lock" switch - the lip synch was the problem I was most worried about.

It says I`ve only got 999 images instead of the over 2000, but it seems to show them all - I guess the counter just doesn`t go that high. A small handful of the images are so distorted that you can`t see what`s on them, about five images. I guess I`ve found an unsupported resolution or something.

Recording directly to it from a video source is easy enough. Thankfully it ignores the copy protection on dvd and videos, I didn`t think to check that before I bought it.

Playback onto a tv gives a very soft image but it`s okay.

As an external hard drive it seems simple enough to use although it won`t work just on the usb power, it needs its battery or the mains supply.

I copied what looks like the operating system files off the unit and put them onto a cd. They`re the same as the ones on the supplied disk except for two extra ones that are only on the player. Not sure what these were but they were dated May 2007 wereas all the other files are dated 2004.

You can switch it on with the button lock engaged - very poor implementation of the lock.

But everything seems fine so far. The battery has lasted 3 hours with continuous use.
Can`t think of anything to add except that I`m happy with my new shiny toy and thanks for pointing it out to me in the first place.

Anyone bought a car adapter yet?

RE: CINEMA SOUND SYSTEM. cheap!!!

Yes,
I bought one recently and found it defaulted to a loudish volume level.

Apart from that it`s fine.

Tesco MP3 player MP-906 at £4.97 (256 Mb) also use as a USB memory stick

Hi All,
I couldn`t see this in any recently posts.

Bought one recently.

Good Points
Cheap
Simple to use (due to lack of all but basic functions)
Includes H/phone
Includes battery (AAA quoted as 8 hours play)
256 Mb (about 60 songs)
Plays MP3 and WMA (with DRM option)

Bad Points
Uses 2.5 mm h/phone socket (the less popular small jacks)
Sound quality not great, but okay if your outdoors where ambient noise hides this problem)

RE: £25 worth of money-saving coupons from Tesco

As someon`s tried it and it`s okay I guess I`m just being paranoid.

Guess it`s just a completely separate division of Tescos

RE: £25 worth of money-saving coupons from Tesco

Hello,
Followed the link, registered, then found the Tesco offer, then I was sent to one of those secured web site called https://www.clothingattesco.com.

Hmm...

Looks professional, but there`s something not quite right, something a bit different.
(The style of the site seems to be different to the main tesco site)

Went to www.tesco.com and couldn`t find the link back to the above site, or to any clothing. Getting even more suspicious.

Seems like a lot of trouble if it`s not a real site. Why would you bother?

I`m going to call a freephone tesco number to ask.
I could be completely wrong to be paranoid as I`m not a tesco online user.

Didn`t look around the site to see how big it was, which might have made me feel better if it had all the regular clothing products.

I`ll get back a bit later to apologise for my sudden attack of paranoia.
(am I developing a phobia ? I normally surf with little regard for safety)

RE: Lite-On LVW-5006 DVD Recorder £66.99

Hello niteowl,

It`s done via a manufacturer`s software upgrade which is burnt to disk, this usually has new dvd disk information which is needed apparently to maintain compatability with new blanks and occasionally to updgrade the operating system, depending on which model you have.

You can find a lot of information, and the details you`re lookig for as well as help at www.liteonusers.org.uk they`re very helpful and it`s a friendly place, like this forum (I`m being serious !! Some forums are terrible).

RE: Lite-On LVW-5006 DVD Recorder £66.99

Hello,
I don`t have any experience with Savastore but I do have one of these machines, bought about a year or so ago for about double the price.

They usually have a manufacturers 3 year warrantly i.e. usually means one year with the shop and two with the manufacture - keep the receipt and check that what I say still holds.

The machine is fine, records on everything shiny except dvd dual layer and dvd ram.

Runs on a standard pc dvd recorder so the drive can be replaced when it eventually goes after the warranty, if you want to keep on using it, and if the drives haven`t moved on too much.

If this is the type of machine you are looking for I would not hesitate to recommend it at this price - at the least it`s a cheap option to transfer video camera footage direct to disk.

(you can remove the macro-vision protection as well, so good for transferring your favourite old vhs tapes to dvd)

RE: Home Bargain (Nationwide Shops)

Hello,
Bit of a fan myself, and many things scifi.

When I got home I saw that it`s eight films not the six I said originally.
Seen all the films but got the set anyway.

Comet - Cheapish DVD+RWs Disks

Hello,
Ridata DVD rewritable disks, 25 for £9.99, in the shop [Comet].

NOTE: can`t remember if these were + or -, but they are the ones that don`t need "finalising/closing" if you move them off to another dvd player to watch [pretty certain they are the + version].

Not the cheapest disks in the world but not a bad price from a high street retailer and you don`t have to buy a huge quantity... 25 isn`t a lot, really...we`ve got a dvd tv recorder...

Home Bargain (Nationwide Shops)

Hello,
Home Bargains - national shop but mainly in the North I think - are selling video tape box sets.

Star Trek (first eight movies) movie collection £4.99 a bit old and hammy but hey, if it`s your thing.
Indiana Jones Movie set (first 3) 2.99 tempted but ended putting them back.

Some other box sets for similar prices, can`t remember what they were as they weren`t to my taste (eg set of 3 Tom Cruise movies and others).

While I`m at it, they are selling a single line kite, a biplane design for £2.99.
I haven`t assemble or tried it yet but it is a good price for this type of novelty flying kite. (It`s not a picture/image printed onto a flat kite). They seem to be slow movers {no pun intended}.

(no, I don`t work for them or have shares or anything, just a bit of a "fan" :/ )

But I don`t think I`ll get any as my computer had a hiccup and I seem to have double applied somehow... bummer.

RE: Wharfdale WDP-1210

Thanks for the information.

I`m a bit confused now.
It looks like there are two types of 1210 about, RB gave the instructions for the region free setting at the begining of the thread and koolcoll gave a different set.

My machine is a Techonosonic but looks like the 1210 (but turns out to be functionally different).

But I think most of us have come away with a working region free option.

Thanks everyone for contributing.

RE: Home Bargain - box set 24hr, season 2 (video) at £1.99

Hi Again,
Yes, it`s a high street shop, national chain I believe but weighted to the North of England. Main office in Liverpool where I am so there are quite a few around here.

RE: Wharfdale WDP-1210

Hello vitara and everyone,
Thanks for the info.
I`ve tried the menu button on my Technosonic remote when the disk is out and still no screen controls.

I guess it really is specially modified / made for Argos.

regards

RE: Wharfdale WDP-1210

Thanks Vitara.... where did the post go?

Vitara posted a message to say they have just bought the wharfdale 1210 and it has a volume control at the bottom centre of the remote and picture options on pressing menu when no disk is inserted.

So it is different to my Technosonic which doesn`t have these, and was dearer (£150), but I bought it about 6 months ago so I don`t feel too bad about the price, just the functions! ! ! !

Update - oops, there you are.

Update - I`ll try the menu button on the remote, let you know what happens.

Home Bargain - box set 24hr, season 2 (video) at £1.99

Hello All,

Home Bargain(s) are selling the box set of season 2 - 24hour(s) - video for £1.99 (ie two pounds). It`s the cops and robbers / consipiracy US tv drama thingy. It`s been on tv but for two pounds...?

Wasn`t too sure of what I was buying, just a bit of the season or the whole thing, haven`t tried them yet. They`re in a pile with my other bargain videos that I haven`t made time to see.

There are five tapes all at least 200 minutes long so that`s at least 16 hours worth.

Hope this is of interest to some.
Bye

Update - That`s £1.99 for the whole box of five tapes.

RE: Wharfdale WDP-1210 multiregion hack

Hello koolcoll,

Tried your region free instructions but it didn`t work on my Technosonic.

So it looks like my unit only looks like your unit, and that there have been some changes made.
(mine doesn`t have a volume control on the remote and when I press menu I only get the dvd menu page [ie what`s available on the disk/disk options/opening page of the dvd menu] not a screen control menu)

But the multi region instructions from RB work just fine.

Bye

Hello,
Can someone confirm that the 1210 has a volume control on the remote and when you press the menu button (on the remote or unit itself?) picture controls come up? - Thanks
