One of the most controversial and prolific filmmakers of all time, having made over 180 films during a 45-year period, Spanish director Jess Franco (Vampyros Lesbos, Venus In Furs) initially made his name directing low-budget exploitation thrillers and horror films. In the late 1960s, however, Franco turned his attentions to the works of the Marquis De Sade and managed to produce two of the most highly regarded classics of the erotic film genre, Justine and Eugenie.
Based on De Sade`s notorious novel `Philosophy In The Boudoir`, Eugenie tells the tale of an innocent young woman (Marie Liljedahl) whose father (Franco regular Jack Taylor) takes her to stay at an island paradise at the request of the elegant Madame de Saint Ange (Maria Rohm), by whom he is entranced. There, Eugenie becomes the unwitting pawn in a game of sexual debauchery and sadomasochistic pleasure as the enigmatic hostess and her stepbrother conspire to corrupt her, transforming her from a virginal innocent into a sexually-charged sadist. Regarded by many as Franco`s masterpiece, Eugenie is a visually stunning and unusually faithful adaptation of De Sade`s work and remains one of the most controversial explorations of extreme sexuality in European cinema history.
