Review for WWE Wrestlemania 29

8 / 10

Wrestlemania is one of the biggest events for the WWE. It is their Superbowl, their FA Cup final, it is the best of the best showing the whole world what the WWE is all about. For many people, they may miss every Raw, Smackdown and PPV that is shown, but everything stop for Mania. This year felt a bit more special than usual. This year felt like an old skool Wrestlemania with a number of big matches well built and meaning something and a few that were so-so in regards to their build, but still entertaining.

First up the lack of a Divas match is a double edged sword, in a way I'm glad that I don't have to suffer another awful match, but the fact that I don't get to see them is a shame. Ryback against Mark Henry is the mess I expected and because of that I was almost fine with it. Randy Orton, Sheamus and Big Show against The Shield was again fine though I do wish they had dropped this match and shown the Wade Barrett against The Miz match (which is featured here as a special feature) as this was much better.

Chris Jericho against Fandango was perfect and exactly what it should have been. Not a technical masterpiece by any means, but if WWE wanted to put over Fandango then Jericho was the guy to do it with. Team Hell No (Daniel Bryan and Kane) against Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston was a nice tag match and though I expected more it was at least watchable and having AJ out there to look at didn't hurt.

Triple H against Brock Lesnar wasn't as great as their previous match, but was certainly entertaining and that stipulation (with Triple H retiring) usually is the death knell for a match, but with this one it created a bit of doubt that made it great. As for Alberto Del Rio against Jack Swagger? It existed and it wasn't painful, that's all I can say.

The main event of John Cena against The Rock was fine in a way. They both put on a solid match and in comparison to the previous year it was an improvement and hopefully if they do decide to do a rematch at the next one or at Summerslam it will be just as good.

But despite that being the main event, the WWE Championship match, the match everyone cared about and raved about was CM Punk and The Undertaker. Now, there was no way that Punk was breaking the streak, but watching it there were moments when even I thought maybe Undertaker is going to cement Punk as THE MAN by allowing him to win. Now that would be awesome. This match was just filled with great moments and was without doubt the match of the night.

The Hall of Fame is included in full as it always is and I think it will certainly be a huge selling point of this DVD. Mick Foley's induction was wonderful and full of the humour and great stories you would expect from him. Donald Trump and Bob Backlund weren't as bad as I thought, though Backlund chose the oddest person to induct him (Maria Menounos) which made no sense. Booker T was wonderful as I expected and Trish Stratus dropped a perfect bombshell on the crowd to leave us all stratisfied. Now as for Bruno Sammartino? I think he deserves to be in there, but his induction wasn't the main event that I expected it to be and I feel they should have let Foley have his moment in the sun as the main focus of this one.

Wrestlemania 29 was a great PPV and certainly one that I would revisit. Sure when you break it down, it really consisted of a few average matches and two or three great matches, but sometimes when it comes to Wrestlemania that is all you need. This is certainly one to add to the collection.
