Review of Mondo Topless (Russ Meyer)

6 / 10

Introduction

Mondo Topless is a tit movie masquerading as a documentary. A series of sequences of busty ladies jiggling topless to music makes up the entire running length of the 1966 movie. In something of a Playboy-style move, some of the go-go dancers offer their own observations on their art, but matters are not helped particularly by the movie`s narrator John Furlong, bellowing over the action as if communicating with a hard-of-hearing colleague.

Plotless, but hypnotically mesmerising like watching jelly on a plate, Mondo Topless doesn`t try to con you it is anything else than a mammaromaniac fantasy.

Video

Presented in its original 4:3 aspect ratio, the picture is as with the other releases in the series excellent under the circumstances.

Audio

A rather tinny, strident mono mix is reproduced in Dolby Digital 2.0.

Features

The disc includes a very young and shiny-looking Jonathan Ross presenting his Incredibly Strange Film Show piece on Meyer which introduced the great man to a British audience (and to Yours Truly). The inclusion of this documentary makes this title a must for the Meyer collection. The disc also includes a photo gallery, and the ever-present trailer reel.

Conclusion

The content of this disc makes for a short review without going into lurid detail of the dancers and their somewhat limited routines. What sets this disc aside and makes it a must for anyone collecting the Russ Meyer movies is the inclusion of Jonathan Ross`s documentary on Meyer as part of his Incredibly Strange Film Show series.
