Review of Gang Law

Introduction

Kool (Silkk) is the cliché good kid in the hood. He has no desire to go to college, but instead has promise as a rapper. Kool has a girlfriend, LaShawna (Shireen Crutchfield), and a group of friends who have little else to do except listen to music, admire cars and otherwise hangout. Kool`s world, although not perfect, is stable. But then things go terribly bad. While walking home from Kool`s house, LaShawna stumbles across a stabbed police officer who ends up dying in her arms. She is pegged for the murder and locked away in jail, seemingly without even being questioned.

Not wanting to see his love sent away, Kool makes a deal with Tully (Gary Busey), the officer in charge of the case. Tully figures a local kingpin set up the cop`s murder and he wants Kool to infiltrate the gang and get evidence. Kool agrees and sets out on his inevitable path downward where the good-guy questions authority and blazes his own path. There must, of course, be consequences and eventual triumph, but at what cost?

Video

A very poor picture that I would consider to be bad even for a broadcast film. The colours are dull and lifeless with no excitement at all. The image is free from noise and dirt, but cannot pull itself from the mire caused by the total lack of vibrancy from the colour department.

I have never seen a red car on film that looked so dull.

Audio

Two channel stereo soundtrack that is heavily reliant on a music background. This gets a bit annoying at times but could probably be excused as adding mood to the film. It just put me in a mood.

Cast notes, production notes, photo gallery and a trailer. That`s all.

Conclusion

With film such as Boyz in the Hood doing a good job in the mainstream market this film had a lot to live up to. It failed. At times the film seemed no more than a promotional video for Master P`s latest line of clothing.

I have seen no other film that makes guns and gangs seem so much of a big thing and I can`t help but feel that it was just a vehicle for a selection of rap music stars to play at being actors with guns. A shame.

The film is made up almost entirely of clichés and stereotypes that in this day and age aren`t giving the viewing public much credit of intelligence for making their own minds up.
