Review for UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez

    8 / 10

This is one of those events that I'll be honest, I skipped straight to the main event. Did I care that Tito Ortiz was fighting again? Not particularly. I knew that despite Couture continuing to power his way through the competition in his 40s, Ortiz hadn't won a fight since 2006 (and he was ten years younger than Couture!). No I skipped straight to Lesnar vs. Velasquez because it was the fight I was interested in and it didn't disappoint. I think.
Before I complained that some fights go on too long, some are just too quick, this fight was definitely blink and you'll miss it, but it didn't matter. The reason why this fight was so good was that the build up to it was perfect. Lesnar had won his previous four fights and in the process become the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion. Velasquez was undefeated and won two Knockout of the Night awards. It was a fight that was built perfectly and that is why I skipped straight to it.
Despite being overshadowed by the main event, the undercard is actually pretty solid too. Ortiz vs. Matt Hamill is a good showing by both with Ortiz looking at times like he could actually still be a contender. The rest are good fights if a little unexciting at times.
The DVD also includes all the preliminary bouts which again are again fine, but nothing special. However Mike Guymon vs. Daniel Roberts is a great fight that probably should have been on the main card and won a thoroughly deserved 'Submission of the Night' award. Also included is a number of behind the scenes extras which are good for giving more behind the scenes to the fights. Considering the outcome of the main event, I expected a little more to these extras, but they are still good at showing the build to the event which as I said before was excellent.
UFC 121 is a great example of a main event dominating the PPV and living up to its hype. Lesnar and Velasquez was a great fight and they were bolstered up perfectly by the other fights around it. It will be interesting to see if or when these two meet up again as I'm sure it will be just as good.
