Review for UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2

    8 / 10

One of the reasons why UFC is better than WWE (yes I said it) is that rematches are given time to mean something. In WWE we can see the rematch almost every week, whereas with UFC once two fighters have been in the Octagon together it could be months or even years before they face each other again. Four months since his controversial win against BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar was back to prove everyone that his win at UFC 112 wasn't a flook. Also on the card UFC Legend Randy Couture took on relative newcomer James Toney in what could possibly be the upset of the night. Toney was out to prove he was more than just a boxer and as always Couture was out to prove that he was a 'UFC Legend' for a reason.
This event was actually pretty good because apart from the Couture match they all progressed beyond the first round. Though saying that the Couture match was still pretty awesome. Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis, Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard, Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda were all great examples of just why UFC is so intense and those who go into it really need to be at the top of their game. All three was full of amazing action and at any point you would think that someone could win. Randy Couture vs. James Toney was a little short, but well worth it. This match proved without a shadow of a doubt just how good Couture is, also proved that you could still be in MMA beyond 40. Frankie Edgar vs. B.J. Penn is possibly one of the best technical bouts I've seen. This felt more like I was watching a boxing match, but full of the action you'd expect from UFC. Both men proved they were worthy of being called 'champions'.

The DVD also includes all the preliminary bouts which includes two disappointing fights that feature Brits Andre Winner and Nick Ozipczak. But also a great fight between Joe Lauzon vs. Gabe Ruediger and Dan Miller vs. John Salter. Also included is a number of behind the scenes extras which are good for giving more behind the scenes to the fights.
UFC 118 was a great event. I thought that the mix of matches would be a little off or the Couture match would be throwaway, but it was anything but that. This was a great mix of action and psychology and definitely one of the best UFC PPVs I've seen.
