sounds daft but turn off pc unplug hard drive, plug in hard drive, switch on again. Is it the only hard drive in the system? can others be seen?

Also try switching the SATA port its connected to (just to be sure).

It does depend on the cause of the failure, but its quite unlikely that the manufacturer would pay for data recovery (exception here though).

They (the manufacturers) all say you should back up important files and not rely on a single drive. Small comfort I know, but its advice everyone should listen to.

ive got 2 sata ports on my mobo and tried them both. unfortunately ive got the maxtor diamond 22 500gb thats affected by the firmware failure. just my luck >:(
if i cant see the drive in the pc`s bios - would purchasing a drive enclosure help - and use usb to connect to pc?

if u guys think that`ll help [the enclosure] i`ll buy one n try it.
thanks

Putting it in a drive enclosure won`t help.

If its one affected by the firmware update, aren`t they (Seagate/Maxtor) paying for data recovery anyway?
