Help a dummy: How to network my PC & Lappy at home

Neiliboy (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 3rd January 2009, 15:24

Fairly straightforward really.......

XP on the main home PC but we only ever use one profile - Mine...so all the folders are on there but i`m not sure of they`re `shared` (not sure if they need to be? in which case how?)

Essentially i wanna be able to see the PC files (pics and music) from the lappy.

Lappy is running Vista and the router is the good old TP-Link favourite....

Um not sure what else i need to tell you really except i`m super thick at this kind of stuff so spaz language only please!

Thanks in advance :)

just run the network setup wizard on the main pc, then save the file it gives you, then run that on the lappy, & right click on the drives/files you wanna share over the network & select the sharing option.

should work fine after than.

i find it easier to manually do this sort of thing its more accurate and i can fine tune things as well first of go to your vista and xp machines go to system on each machine and put
into same workgroup name to get there go to start menu --control panel--perfomance and maintance and select changes type in a name for your workgroup for example mine is called yim (family name) then on your vista pick a folder we used `downloads` right click it
go to properties and click sharing then advanced sharing click share this folder then click permissions choose everyone and check the boxes for full control apply and ok it and go to
security tab click edit and add then type everyone and check the full control box apply and ok it now this folder is shared do the same on xp computer and check firewalls on both allow file sharing check this by going to network places on a computer and choose view computers and devices click the computer icon if it says network saurce unavailable
or similar go to that computer and (norton) and click view history you will find the computers ip select the entry (highlight) and click more details then click allow thats it
go to other computer and access it should be there do the same for the other computer
hope this helps

the memory of you will bloom like the flower in the garden of my heart
