Registry Cleaner?

Anyone recommend a free reg cleaner? MS RegClean is no longer available or supported by MS.

CCleaner has a reg cleaner in its tools.

Hey Mister Smee, have you used a reg cleaner before. Still undecided whether to try it or not. My PC is about 5 yrs old. Apart from the usual deleting files in "internet options", running disc defrag., removing(visible)unwanted stuff, could this increase the efficiency of the PC ? I would not reformat the PC as this is above my head. Any opinions I`d be grateful for.

Hey Faust. I used to use regclean, an unofficial download from Microsoft but it seems long gone. I don`t usually bother but I`ve uninstalled some crap software (such as EasyShare from Kodak) and just wanted to tidy things up.

Pete...what I`d recommend:

1) Uninstall any unwanted applications from the machine via the add/remove option in control panel.

2) Use CCleaner to tidy up unwanted files and the registry tools to look for/fix errors. Include the options for `old` prefetch files in there. Also ensure you check the startup programs. Since many people often have a lot of stuff running at startup that doesn`t need to be.

3) If you don`t regularly do any searching for files on your machine, then right-click on the C: drive (assuming Windows is installed there) and untick the "Allow indexing service...". This is just something that slows the machine down (except when searching for files). So if you don`t search for files regularly, then there`s no point in it being on.

4) If you have more than one physical hard drive in the machine (not just one drive partitioned) then you should also think about moving the page file to the other drive. (Google for that one and you`ll find loads of articles about how to do it).

5) Use a defrag tool like "Defraggler" - made by the same guys who make CCleaner and fully defrag your C: drive.

You`ll never get it running as nicely as a clean build, but doing the general housekeeping should keep it well oiled enough to keep using it.

There`s also loads more tips about switching off unwanted services, turning off themes etc. so if you wanted to do more, there are more options, but I`d see how you get on with the above first.

Thanks for this lovely info -I am now running defraggle and have an embarrassingly large...amount of fragmented files. I am hoping this will solve my slowness...or at least that of the computer. If only they did human de-frag!

Run it again?
However, I would bet there is almost zero benefit to it..... Drives and processors are so quick now that defragging is, imho, almost redundant. But the placebo effect of seeing the chart having lots of blocks of the same colour suddenly seems to make you think your PC is quicker.............
Sometimes you open an app and it opens in a couple of seconds and sometimes it takes a few more - no matter what the state of the disk - it just depends on what else it`s doing, if you`ve run or recently etc....
