Philips PPX 2480 PicoPix
Seems to be 80 lumens, wow, that's amazingly low for brightness. I dread to think how dark a room you'd need to even see the image at all, but I suspect it's somewhere around completely pitch black. They don't even list it as ANSI lumens so it's probably not even as bright as it sounds, and it sounds as bright as a small torch.

ACER X110P
Spec wise, this one actually looks quite good. Not sure about the noise level, you might find it distracting.

INFOCUS IN112
Spec looks okay, again don't know about the noise level. But I dislike Infocus because a friend had one and the bulb literally exploded at around 700 hours, then Infocus where really disgustingly disinterested and it took a lot of hassling to get a replacement bulb and also the unit fixed, because it had a heat design flaw and needed a firmware upgrade that ended up making the fan really noisey all the time.

Optoma DS211 2500 ANSI
The spec for this one looks okay as well.

But I'd definitely go for the 720p Optoma 600 over all of these, I'm sure you'll notice the difference especially on a big screen.

many thanks for taking the time to reply, really is appreciated as i know nought on this topic, although as i have been doing the research it`s starting to get better. well i have one on hold, optoma 600, in richer sounds for this afternoon. i guess i just wanted that nudge over the line if you like, bad sports analogy....

the screen will be the next thing, i think i might have mentioned the screen earlier in the thread but it wasn`t top of the list. i will be after some specific advice later if that`s ok? many thanks.

Optoma do a nice screen for £85, but it depends how big you want. I just gave an old one away on Freecycle a few weeks ago. :/

My advice, don't get a grey or silver one, get a white one. The more you pay the less ripples it will have. I don't notice any ripples with the Optoma one I got recently.

Hmm... explain please.

All my previous experience with demos and reading a few forums suggest a grey colouring improves contrast and black level.
If this is not the case my grey one shall be removed from situ and replaced with the one on my window which is white :D LOL.

Oh and rippling is the only huge downside I`m finding to my setup but got it pretty flat now with some adjustment.

A grey screen will not increase the contrast ratio, it can't. The only thing that can increase the contrast ratio is the projector itself. What a grey screen will do is make dark areas slightly darker, however it has a downside of making the brightest of areas slightly less bright.

What they do is give you the illusion that the contrast ratio is better, which probably is after all what you might want. But it is at the expense of the brightest areas.

Personally I'm not convinced they make much of a difference at all unless you have a ridiculously bright projector, which I know I don't. If your whites are so bright that you want to tone them down, then I'd think about getting one.

I'm not saying here you should swap yours Jimbo, I'm just saying if you did you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

When dealing with high end companies like Sim2 and Runco, they were all about the grey screen.

Picked it up this afternoon. first impressions, i know it doesn`t mean that much but the way it was packaged etc..was a good start. nothing more annoying than finding a box that seems like its been opened/repackaged. the projector was wrapped and inside a carry bag which was nice. it reminded me of when cameras came in nice cases etc. i know its not always the case but you are lucky if you get a strap etc with cameras these days.

first proper reaction when it was switched on and hooked up to blu ray was crikey that is a very, very big picture. know i was expecting it to look impressive but i don`t go to the cinema know so i was not expecting that. i have a bit of tinkering and setting up to do, is there anything i need to do? but so far big thumbs up.

i mentioned screens briefly and said it wasn`t urgent and i would watch on the wall, well it quickly became apparent that this wouldn`t` really work. the walls are plain but a pale blue, but i forgot they have, well little dimple effect, so i think i need to look at the screen know. we measured the picture on the wall and it was around 90 inches. problem i guess will be money, do i have any options? i was looking at a pull down one but to be honest i have been told that maybe a pull up one would be more suitable. you see the room is a more traditional front room with no T.V. etc.. i wouldn`t know about attaching a drop down one, although from quick searches they seem to be cheaper than the pull up ones.

speakers could be the other issue. i have the 5.1 set up, upstairs with my telly. as i said earlier we want to keep it as a sitting room that happens to double up but having three/five speakers may not be great. for the coming weeks i will probably use them but are there any options? i have seen these sound bars, are they any good? sorry for all the questions, but i do need some help regarding the screen please. cheers.

Pull ups are a pain in the arse. IMHO.

This Xenta soundbar gets a good write-up in avforums and is going cheap on ebuyer right now. I have seen the price fluctuate up to £150. £100 is the cheapest I`ve seen it.
