Help with a Sky+ problem

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 20th November 2008, 21:40

I turned on my Sky+ box to check the settings because I`m going away for a few days & wanted to make sure it was set up ok to record a few programs while away.
In the planner I had the last four recording showing as failed. When i clicked on info, it says there was a power cut.
I knew that wasn`t true as I had watched another channel at the time of one of the recordings.
To test it out, i pressed the record button, insted of starting to record, all i got was the please wait banner across the screen. I waited a few mins then pressed backup to cancel.
I tried the Sky+ planner rebuilt, still wouldn`t record, then tried the full format (can`t remember what its called, but it deletes all in the planner.
This didn`t help, it still won`t record.
Am I right in thinking that the hard drive has failed?
If so, can I do anything about it other than buying a new hard drive, or a new Sky+ box?

Anyone here have a Sky+ box, say because of upgrading to HD they would like to sell me? And it I do change the box, is it just a case of connecting the cables up, or do I need to do anything else?

I don`t have time to sort this out right now, I`m leaving in the morning, but it would be nice to know what my choices are when I get back.
Thanks

I won`t be able to post back till Saturday night (as long as i can get my 3 mobile dongle to work!)
If for some reason it won`t work, I`m back home end of the week.
I am interested in buying your Sky+ box.
Can you tell me how big the hard drive is?
Thanks, hope to sort something out with you soon. :)

You just need to swapout the connections & maybe register with Sky that your box has changed if you take a premium channel to receive them on the new box.

Pat - I had this problem with my Sky box a bit a go. If you do the following, it might work (it did for me anyway):

- unplug the box at the wall
- remove any scart or HDMI leads, wipe over the sockets with a duster or cloth, then put the leads back in
- plug the box back in to the wall and switch the power on (at the wall)
- wait 5-10 minutes, then switch the box on

It might be worth trying? Good luck.

my box was one of the earlier 40Gb boxes...i think its a pace off the top of my head....It gave me a problem just once, about a year ago. Wiped the hard drive via system format or whatever you call it and hey presto it was fine....used it about 5 years in total. Apart from that it never gave me any issues at all.

Was going to have an e-bay sesh today but i`ll hang back on the Sky+ box for you.......no worries if you dont want it, i`ll just whack it on next week :)

& of course our Sky+ box with 200Gb drive is due to be sold off in the next few months.

Pat,if you think it is jiggered anyway, try this...

Follow all of the steps to do `full system reset` sevices 4-0-1 select, as I recall.

If you get the housekeeping - please wait banner just pull the mains lead out of the back and replace after about 30 secs, leave the red stand by light on for a couple of mins and then press it to activate the box. See if you can then get back into planner and record.

I did this when mine locked up. I had resigned myself to losing my recordings but the housekeeping stayed on ages - and I mean hours.

I went through the process once more and then I pulled the mains lead after a couple of mins of the housekeeping banner being on screen and - blow me - all was OK.

I did a force software down load after that and, fingers crossed, now all OK.

My box has a 160GB maxtor drive I put in last year.

Hi, thanks for all the advice.
I phoned home & told them to try the above, sadly it still won`t work :(

Neiliboy, can you tell me how much you want for your box?

Thank you all for the help :)
