IMO it depends how well the sound is mastered . I have DD discs that sound better than dts and visa versa but kevos right there aint much difference even if you played 2 evenly mastered discs side by side in either format.

The only disc I have with both dd and dts is Gladiator and to me both sound as good as each other

yes and no. dd is about power and excitement, dts is about subtlety and detail.on the very best systems there are some slight differences but then not all of us have the very best systems-so until uk distributors get their act together and start bringing out dual sound format discs this question will always remain until then! if you must hear a definitive comparison then play the dd6.1 version of the haunting against the dts 7.1 version;you will never believe that a film could make the hairs on your neck stand up-and that dts low end is about as low as it gets! but your all right, there is no real difference!

I`ve only got 2 DTS disks, Gladiator and Shaving Ryans Privates. I can`t tell the difference and I`ve got reasonable kit.
One explosion sounds much like the next I reckon, but if it`s music I can tell the difference between swapping cable, components etc. right away.
But you still have to get DTS obviously, because it`s there and because it`s apparently technically superior.

I dunno if all the people who wrote this have poor amps/speakers or what...

but there is no DTS 7.1, there is s 6.1 version tho

and the difference is audible from the first note of music on a decent system - it`s kinda like the difference between MP3 and original CD, some people it doesn`t bother at all but to some it`s night/day.

as to DTS being about subtley and DD being about power... MATE... come over here and listen to anything in DTS on my system and say that again... it has a dynamic range something like 3 times as large - that means the difference between the quietest noise and loudest possible noise is 3 times larger so when the mines start exploding in Galaxy Quest it`s proper fear-for-your-life stuff rather than just booms!

BUT as i say as with MP3/Cds some people just aren`t bothered, if that you then why spend the extra dosh *shrug*

I am surprised at the responses given so far. I would only have to put it down to the fact that the people who have responded have not been in a position to compare DTS to DD5.1

Firstly, both sound systems are very good. However, DD5.1 is more compressed than DTS and will drop sounds that you will hear on the DTS version.

An explosion is an explosion and that probably isn`t the best place to listen for differences. Although you will still have other background noises during an explosion which may not be as apparant on the DD5.1 version. You need to listen during the quieter stages of the film for discreet noises. Often its the background noises that gets dropped with DD5.1 whereas they are crisp and present on the DTS version. Sound positioning is a little better on DTS too.

yes,my mistake sorry! i refer to 7.1 cos my amp supports TWO centre surround rather than the ONE used by Yamaha and Onkyo. however, why do we all refer to EXPLOSIONS rather than the subtle differences in the soundtrack? my denon amp supports two pairs of surround speakers,so my listening room is more like 8.1 if you like! this is because it resembles a proper cinema with two banks of speakers on either wall, plus two centre surrounds at the back-hope that explains my stupidity! i have to say though,if the reviews in the magazines didnt say any different, would anyone be able to know the difference?!the haunting DOES sound better, but only because im listening for the differences made out by the mag reveiws! antone agree on this one? its a bit like sitting a blind man down in a room and asking him to tell u the difference between minidisc and cd,not a lot to most people....
