Identity theft

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 30th January 2024, 00:27

Some of you on here have way more knowledge on things techy than I do.

Simple question.

A few days ago I got a one time passcode by text for a banking app that I have an account with but have not used in a few weeks (mostly used for travel).
Scratched my head and deleted it.
I've just had a one time code for Klarna which I don't have an account with and have never even considered one.

Is someone trying to use my ID to get into accounts I have or open something in my name?

Even if you can suggest what if anything I should be doing about it I'd be grateful.

contact your bank asap is my recommendation. I had my card reissued just last week after I got dodgy payments shows up after buying something from a Facebook (which I only joined to find someone to fit a cat flap for my rescue Bess) add, very close to closing it again due to the utter s*** on it no matter how many interesting groups I have found.

As mbilko says best to contact your bank or its fraud squad number right away. I had an on-line account with a smart app that tells if your account has been reached by a new device and its location. When this happened to me, money had been accessed in Manchester, where I am no-where near. I contacted the fraud squad number that day and they changed my passwords right away.

£100 was taken but I was refunded during my phonecall to them. It seemed the bank were not even interested in chasing up the criminals. I no longer trust on-line banking very much and only keep enough in that account to buy small things on the internet. I would not like to keep my life savings with an on-line access. No idea how the fraudsters got my details.

That one sounds like someone is trying to reset your login details and may have compromised your email, I'd reset your password for that just to be safe.

That one is super strange. The only thing I can think of is someone is trying to create an account there using your details via another site (like auth using your google/facebook/etc account) type thing, otherwise I'm not sure why they would use your phone number.

Rang my bank, well my main account one.
Nothing untoward on my account, which I knew as I'm on there daily.
Also nothing they no know that I can't see.

Suggested I ring plod which I did and their menu system is ****ed and it threw me off several times.

I think it's one of those text scams that only need to work on the one out of a million people that are in the middle of a transaction with the bank in question.
So I propose to ignore it and just remain as vigilant/paranoid as usual.

This was actually Monzo who don't have passwords but use a PIN and email confirmation system so I don't even think they send out one time codes by text.
Will ring them tomorrow.
